Trane CleanEffects Fan Setting "On" or "CIRC" (Circulate)

To get maximum air cleaning, do I need to have thermostat fan setting to "ON" or will CIRC" setting clean air just as well. According to tech that came for routine service, I was told fan setting had to be set to "ON" for the electronic portion of the filter to be working all the time. The tech said that if you use the circ setting the electronic portion only comes on when furnace starts. When first installed, I was told to use "Circ" setting for keeping air purified. Just need some clarification on advantage/disadvantage of using ON or Circ for maximum air quality. Any clarification would be appreciated. (In particular, on the circ setting, is the electronic portion of CleanEffects working at all other than at startup? ) Thanks Rick

The filter is most likely powered by terminals on the furnace control board. These terminals are on when there is a call for the fan to operate.
The circ mode on the tstat will energize the fan intermittently, and run times will vary depending on settings.
The more the fan is on, the more the filter works.

Any time the fan is running the CE should be on assuming it is wired correctly. If the thermostat fan setting is on the fan will run all the time, if it's on circ the fan will run 30% of the time if the system hasn't ran for a while. I forget what the time frame is but I think it's an hour. If you have Trane VS blower motor it should run at 50% on fan/circ on unless they have a thermostat that can adjust this. If you have a Trane furnace the fan will run at heating speed when the fan setting is on/circ.

Hope this helps.

Just curious - why do you need the air cleaned?

Thanks for the reply. On either the "CIRC" or "ON" settings, I can hear fan/air circulation all the time so not sure about 30 % or 50%. I thought that with thermostat fan setting set to "ON", the fan speed rpms were higher than CIRC setting but I may be wrong. I have a heat pump system with TRANE TCONT802AS32DAA thermostat and air handler model # 4TEE3C1000AA

Let me state how I explain to customers to how to run there system when paired with clean effects (I also have one for my home). My wife and daughter also have bad allergie problems.

The air handler powers the clean effect as long as power is on to the air handler. That does not mean the air handler has to be running for you to have power to it. It means as long as the air handler has power going to it that's its on. Your display for the clean effects should always be on when air handler has power on.

Now to operation as stated above the power should and will always be on to clean effects when the air handler is powered so regardless if it's running or ideal it's powered. But you have to have air moving across it for it to be working. The fan setting either auto, on or circulate all do different things.

Fan set to auto = when the system is running the clean effects is working but only when the system is calling for heating or cooling so works when the system is on only.

Fan set to circulate = the fan coming on if wired properly to run so many times in a hour at 50% fan speed regardless if a call for heating or cooling is needed. This is what I recommend to homeowners and what I use. That way even if the system has no call for heating and cooling the air handler will still come on and clean the air so many times in a hour. If the t-stat or home needs to be cooled or heated it will work normaly. This feature is also good for any 5" filter or plan 1"-2" poly or pleated filters to have the same effect moving air across either a electronic air filter, 5" media filter or standard 1"-2" filters.

Fan set to on= the fan running 24-7/365 days a year if wired properly at 50% air flow of the size system you have. Example (3) ton system set at 400cfm per ton = 1200 cfm when variable speed is ramped up to 100% so at 50% fan speed the unit would run at 600cfm. This works the same with circulate feature but limits the amount of times a hour the system will run. Running the system in on setting all the time can lead to increase humdity in the home.

Personally again I would suggest and use circulate feature to get the best of both worlds.

Thanks so much for the reply. I am going to call the people I bought system from, because on circulate I hear air moving 24/7.
The tech that came out recently either gave me bad information CIRC setting or I misunderstood him. My wife is constantly complaining about the amount of dust in the house, and I was looking for possible solution.

For dust I would start with looking at the duct system supply side and see if there are any leaks that can pulling the dust into the the system and then blowing it into the home? If so the duct system can be sealed using mastic duct sealant. It can be applied to all joints/connections in the system to seal it.

How old of a home to you have? Some homes are worst about dust by design depending on lights, ceiling fans etc... That are not sealed from the house to the attic and when the hvac system comes on pulls from this areas or around doors and windows.

Since your family is suffering from excuse dust in the home a blower door test would be a great idea to see where the home is leaking/drawing in air. This can pinpoint areas that you might not be adware of. That paired with duct testing can hopefully identify this areas. Then you and the hvac pro, energy auditor etc. Can offer solutions to correct this areas. Hope this helps
