Hi there,

I have signed up to this forum in the hopes that someone has seen this before. Since June I have been working through some issues with my newly installed tri-zone senville heat pump SENA/30HF/T. It was installed professionally by a local contractor who we have used before and other family/ friends have used without issue.

Here is a little snippet of an email I sent to senville with some recent add-ins/ updates;

We recently bought a 28000 BTU Tri-Zone Mini Split Air Conditioner - Heat Pump - SENA/30HF/T

It came with 3 heads.
One 12k btu unit in our upstairs living room
One 9k btu unit in our downstairs directly below the upstairs unit 600 sq ft.
One 9k btu unit in our bedroom on the other side of the house, on the same level as the 12k unit 1300 sq ft total.

The 12k unit was performing great it would reach the set temperature and then stop heating as required
The other two 9k units would go higher than their set temperature, and you could never really find the proper temperature set point. We actually gave up on our bedroom unit as it was so bad. The downstairs isnt as bad because our upstairs 12k unit would shut itself off if the downstairs unit was pushing too much heat. It also didnt seem to be as much of a problem as our bedroom unit.

We contacted Senville and we were first advised to do a hard reset with the unit from the breaker. We did that and no improvement.

Next we tried changing all the remotes to the “follow me” function. This had little if any effect. The remotes were left on that setting.

We spoke with a tech from senville who advised that the outdoor main board and the indoor main board for the 12k unit needed replacing. He stated that the outdoor unit was sending the same amount of heat to all three units as the 12k was receiving, or something to that effect. Causing our 9k units to make too much heat.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The outdoor board was changed, and before the indoor 12k btu board was changed the unit was turned on too see if there was any improvement. It showed a pc02 error. At this time it was shut off again, under the assumption that the indoor board may need to be changed along with it to work properly. The indoor 12k unit board was then changed. After turning back on, the pc02 error persisted. It is because of this that we do not suspect the 12k board.

Contacted senile. Advised to leave the unit on for a few hours to let the new board “learn” the new heads, and that this was a common problem that they saw at least once a week. We did a hard reset, then left the unit on for I think almost 10 hours before returning to the house and the pc02 error was still flashing on the screen and the house was ice cold.

Called senville. Explained all of this ^ to the tech and they advised we cut the two sets of red and yellow wires, and skin and twist them all together using a marrett and then test to see if the unit turned on. It still gave the pc02 code. Spoke to same tech and they advised to replace the main board once again.

Senville sends us a new board. The board is changed once again. Still a pc02 error. We find out that the boards they sent us was for a 36k unit. They assure us they will send us the new correct board. it comes and its another board for a 36k unit. call back for a 30k board. They definitely aren't afraid to throw parts at you! 4 boards now.
-----------------------------------------------------^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^----------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------I am putting this stuff inside dashes because, you may be able to omit this as the boards were for the wrong unit----------------------
-------------------------I think the pc02 error may have been because of the incorrect board, just thought I would leave this if it provided a clue-------------

Finally they send us another 30k board. It is installed and the unit is running great again with no error codes, but the temperatures are still out of wack. the 12k unit temp works great, the downstairs works ok, but bedroom will not shut off if the temperature is over the set temp it will still continue to heat.

If this unit could be made to shut off at a temperature above set temp, we would be satisfied. We just want to be able to turn our living room down to say 20c at night, close our bedroom door and leave our bedroom unit on 18c, so that it holds that temp overnight. If we tried to do that right now it would try and reach 20 or higher, just constantly blowing warm. The weird part was the first time we turned it on after changing the board it appeared to be operating correctly- it opened the fan louver but did not heat until required. It was'nt until a day later it returned to its old ways.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Ty

It appears that this is something you installed yourself. Site rules do not allow us to provide technical advice to non-professionals in the HVAC field.

Hi there,

No this was not installed myself. It was installed by a local contractor. It was a requirement to be installed by the contractor to be eligible for the grants. The contractor gave us a quote to install this unit or theirs and it was far cheaper and still elligible. So at the moment we are personally dealing with senville but trying to avoid the call back charge to fix an issue that I think could take multiple days to fix, especially if this was a supplier problem.

Unfortunately this is an all to common scenario for customer purchased equipment.
I’d be willing to bet the EEVs aren’t closing fully and the unit is running off its biggest load.
Its not going to stop heating all the zones until the main zone is satisfied or off.

Your 2 9k units wiring is mixed.

In heating, ANYTIME a head "calls for heating", it will always send hot refrigerant to all the coils.
The fan will always blow when set to heat mode, even when it doesnt need heat.

This is only an issue with widely different heat load patterns across multiple heads, or when indoor heads are oversized.

Is this the only form of heat, or do you also run a furnace or any other type of heat.

Sennville knows nothinf about their units because they get no technical training from the actual manufacturer, nor do they ever have to actually fix them.

As explained above, the bedroom overheating is likely not a fault with the unit. It will happen even when the unit is functioning perfectly, if the unit has been misapplied. This can happen on any mini split brand.

The only way you might be able to salvage the bedroom unit is by switching to a wall controller, and programming the fan to shut off completely when there is no call for heat. I do this with Mitsubishi all the time, no idea if Senville supports it though.
