Hello members!

Can someone give me their personal experience, and advice with dual fuel thermostats and how they resolved the issue in this situation?

We have TH6 Honeywell dual fuel thermostat installed without wi-fi.

I have a newly installed American Standard heat pump, with a American Standard gas LP furnace as the backup heat/aux heat source.

Thanks,

I do not understand how the backup heat turning on when it should is an issue.

First thing is that you need to make sure that the furnace "CAN NOT" run when the heat pump in on except during defrost.

The next thing is how do you want it set up. One way is to limit the heat pump to only run down to certain outside temperature, the other way is have it set up to run till the inside temperature drops to where 2nd Stg on the thermostat kicks in then the heat pump is shut off and the furnace starts and runs till the thermostat reaches set point.

Not all thermostats can handle the duel fuel set up as they will have times when both can run at the same time. The installer should know which thermostat and how to set it up depending on your preference.

Thermostat control of dual fuel is not like aux heat with a water coil or electric strips.
It brings the fuel hat on after shutting down the heat pump.
Many systems have an outdoor thermostat lockout so aux will not engage above a setpoint ambient temp.

Have you asked the installer to verify that the auxiliary heat is working as it should?
It’s difficult for us to determine without being there.

I hope you are not trying to set this up yourself. If done wrong, you could damage your system. This is something that is better left to your HVAC service company.

If this is a new install, the person who installed it should go over that with you.

My HVAC installer led me to believe that he was well upon the game being in the service for 45 years. However, he has the same problem himself with a natural gas dual fuel furnace and heat pump that he himself cannot set up correctly. this only came to light after the install was done and the only thing left to do was to program the thermostat.

Thanks

By experimenting with the thermostat only and not making any changes to the system itself, I have discovered that a two, three, or four degree set point change does not engage the auxiliary or backup heat. However, when I raised the thermostat to 75° from 69°, the heat pump shut down and the gas furnace kicked in.

Thanks
