Don't think electrical tape would help, IR's just won't give you a accurate reading. The best way is to use a Clamp-on thermistor.

Why do you feel the need as a homeowner to take temperature readings? Is there some other issue?

 

electrical tape works fine if it is at least a 2" section that is wrapped. in fact, any non-metallic non-reflective opaque surface will work. paint, tape, dirt, poo, etc...

 

Depending on the type of IR thermometer you are using, the emissivity of the target will affect the reading.

I've linked to a chart of emissivities for various materials. The ideal emissivity for your particular instrument will likely be found in the owner's manual.

Thanks guys. i have no real need to monitor this stuff other than my own neurotic brain that feels it needs to. Until i satisfy a desire for information, etc, it haunts me. LOL!!
