Ruud vs Ameristar (limited availability of other options) - Florida

    Hi All,

1700 SF Rental house - limited options for availability to get tenants cooled. Northwest Florida.

Condenser unit, only. Was dual fuel, but we are retaining the Carrier gas furnace.

No availability of Carrier, Goodman, or American Standard.

    Options:
    - Ameristar (80% cheaper than Ruud)
    - Ruud

I have usual gone with Ruud when close - thoughts?

    Thanks.

Ameristar used to be made by Midea made in China. Trane/Am Std has switch to production to the US with the Ameristar and RunTru line. Basically it's Trane's budget line. I've installed a few and didn't see any issues with them. The Midea Ameristar units are now called Ox Box. They are still made in China I believe.
They're definitely built cheaper than the Trane/ AmStd, but they work fine. They're pretty simple, sometimes simple is good when it comes to this industry. The one RUUD I've installed had a defrost control board failure about a year after installation. It was a known issue as they have since changed the board configuration. Other than that, "knock on wood", no issues with that one either. Quality wise, I would say the RUUD is a little nicer looking, but I don't have much history with them. The Chinese made OxBox use cheaper components, but their quality control is superior to the US built equipment.

I think I'm gonna go with Ameristar - the 20% difference in price is pretty meaningful if they are generally close in performance/warranty.

Does that Ameristar have the LG compressor? and probably has the PSC fan, but for a rental, go for it.

I switched to run tru Ameristar....
Honestly for the price.... they are the best builder grade units out there.
High and low pressure safeties, spine fin coil.
    Perfect for a rental.
    I choose them above Goodman

The HVAC tech/owner mentioned the spine fin coil, as well!

Yeah the spine fin is truly awesome in MOST respects. They tend to run better dirty than a tube/fin runs clean.
However, IF it develops a leak it's likely toast. I used to install trane spine fins in those places that don't get proper maintenance/ cleaning.
Now with the run tru I install them everywhere.
