Trane RTHD - how to pump thge oil from the evaporator to the sump

    Hello:

I have read multiple posts here about the troubleshooting and prevention of oil migration to the evaporator on Trane RTHD chillers, but I cannot seem to find any helpful suggestion for moving the oil back up to the sump without removing the refrigerant from the chiller.

Does anyone know of an oil pump that is rated for refrigeration systems that I can use to transfer the oil back to the sump? Many automotive fluid pumps and hand refrigerant oil pumps come up when searching online. I was thinking of an electric oil pump from a small chiller, but I am having trouble finding a part number.

    Thank you,

Pic is From a previous thread about the Rthd oil issue.
Pretty sure u need to run unloaded to get dsh up.
Liquid pump ref from bottom of evap to oil sump and boil off ref.

    Wrong answer . ….
Use a recovery unit , evap to oil sump and allow the heater to boil off refrigerant .

Recovery machine like mentioned before but if you are looking for a oil pump, most people pulled them off of 1st gen 30HXC or York HT. I found mine in eBay, tuthill is the brand.

Run fully UNLOADED to return oil to sump. Verify gas pump is operational.

Thanks to everyone offering the great advice.

Does anyone have a Trane procedure for verifying the operation of the gas pump? I have verified the solenoids energize and deenergize, but I know there is more than that. I have read about a check valve, I believe at the compressor. The only pressure ports are on the isolation valves for what looks like an insulated filter housing.

The small line to the compressor with the solenoid must be to draw oil from the bottom of the evaporator and move it into the canister mounted under the evaporator.
The small line to the condenser with the solenoid must be to push the oil out of the canister, through the insulated filter, and into the low side of the compressor.
    Does this sound correct?

    Gas Pump Diagnostics

Been a while since I worked for Mother Trane or on RTHD, however pages 59-60 of the attached is a good guide rlc-svd05a-en-final.pdf also modifications for the original gas pump RTHD-SVN01B-EN Gas Pump Modifications.pdf
Necessity is the mother of invention

Check your discharge superheat with it running . You should see it rise and fall as the gas pump cycles .
If you have trendview it should look like a shark fin on the temperature graph

had this issue many times common cause is either running a low load for long period of time of defective gas pump
what I do is us a standard manual oil pump 3/8 line to the bottom of the oil sep to the inlet of pump and 3/8 on the out let of pump to the service valve after the oil solenoid valve to compressor pump as much oil over as possible from the sep go to the controller and ensure the optical eye sensor reads wet
then disable soft loading and start chiller and monitor oil sensor if compressor is able to load up to 100% then monitor oil return and check gas pump operation

Exactly how to do it. Allow a solid 24 hours of heater time and 4-5 hours of evap to oil sump....dont forget to close vent line!

Yes...works great. You can use a sightglass and check after to confirm you have right level in sump. Works everytime.

Can you explain to me how pumping oil out of the oil separator and into the compressor after the oil solenoid valve is going to give you a wet optical eye??? I’ve been a Trane tech for 20 years and this is a new one to me.

I can get that compressor started and optical eye wet in 5 seconds but I can’t post how to do it in the open forum.
