I know you couldn't hear it but I just cheered.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

Awesome! Even though my video are a little rough I will say that this video is way better than the previous. I even did a little editing

AND the pico scope made a HUGE difference in my ability to measure things and really show what is going on. I'll have a pretty sweet video on power factor coming out in the next week or two.

He's another tech that's in residential. We do a lot of stuff together like hunt and workout. He's told me a thousand times that if he ever had to work on my system he would rip all the wires out, first thing, and just go back in with a smart thermostat. So I posted that video just to mess with him.

It is nice to know for sure. I hate the idea of boring people so I’m glad to hear that!

Another awesome video! Looking forward to more, and what else you do with that oil burner igniter.

    THX Jman for the video...

I suspect the inductive load of a motor or Xformer has something to do with power factor (PF)...

Can you do a video at some point that explains the relationship between inductive load and PF?

Excellent. I think I understand it now.
So induction will delay the current compared to the voltage and capacitance will advance the current compared to the voltage. Correct?

Yes that’s exactly right! Remember the bucket analogy…

An inductor is building up a magnetic field which resists current so the current tends to lag the voltage. Inductors resist change. Kind of like a bucket taking a while to fill, the current takes awhile to peak after the voltage peaks.

Capacitive loads charge quickly and they don’t resist change like inductors. Therefore, they actually start dumping current as the voltage drops. This causes the current to lead voltage. This would be like the bucket dumping even if the water spigot flow decreases.

    Yeah definitely stay tuned

I plan to do some more educational type videos mixed in with my normal videos!

In the meantime see the response above to R600a's post. That may help add some clarity!

Think of an inductor as a sponge that wants to take in water and not change. An inductor is creating a magnetic field and the magnetic field is helping to resist change. Kind of like if you take in water and turn it into ice it will resist going back to water because you have it stored as ice.

A capacitor is like a sponge that wants to immediately dump it's water as soon as possible. All it does is store power (it’s not converting it to a magnetic field). It doesn’t mind storing power, but it definitely doesn’t want to hold onto it if it doesn’t have to.

@jayman7, So where do you get the Pf number to use in a calculation?

Good question! The manufacturer should know the PF of whatever they produce.

On motors (not always residential but most commerical motors) it will be on the nameplate as "PF" or “cos phi” (phi symbol looks like a goofy "p")

In genreal, if the motor is under a good load (like 75%-100%) you can exspect a PF of about 0.85 on average. However, capacitors can be used to improve PF.

If you have a meter like the fp SC680 it will measure PF, Watts, or VA.
