Tech came out this morning, freon was a little low. So he gassed it up and took a sniffer to the air handler. There's a leak in the coil. Luckily the unit is from 2017 and should still be covered under warranty. I asked why it might be leaking and he said they just age and normally start to leak because of the fact that they "are aluminum now and not copper".
I asked about taking a static reading, either he didn't have the tools or wasn't capable of doing it because he didn't do it. He just changed the subject when I brought it up. He did agree that the unit is probably oversized and that the P-Trap may be too small. And that adding another return would likely help. He said the blower is already on high and that stepping it down to medium would help with the cooling. Though I thought the blower needed to be higher to increase CFM?
I'm going to see who comes to do the coil replacement next week and ask again about the static pressure readings.

Not much confidence in this tech. He really needs to Find the leak before replacing parts. Aluminum coils are better then copper I call BS on that statement. Doesn't perform static pressure readings yet wants to lower the CFM's?
Ask for a senior tech. And get a static test performed.

Agreed, he was a young kid. But he did use the sniffer tool and from below the attic stairs I could see and hear the sniffer going off as he repeatedly waved it over a certain area of the coil. So unless he was manipulating the device and setting off the device manually, the sniffer was detecting a leak. Granted I wasn't in the attic space and couldn't see where he spraying his solution to see where the leak actually was (ie coil, TXV, etc.)
Any tech that does not have a device to check static pressure with him is not a tech in my eyes. This is another example of a system installed that is over sized and does not have a load calc done. Adding return will help but start with the basics especially if you have a problem or else you're just kicking the can down the street.

Just a thought here...
Might contact the shop and specifically request the tech that comes out next... bring along the necessary tools to do a static pressure check...
And I would watch... from a distance of course. Techs get nervous when customers stand over their shoulder...

I dont get nervous, Ask all the questions you want. Ill explain everything as I go!

You and I are exceptions...
Most of the techs I know...
Will literally go out to the van and take a break... if the customer leans over their shoulder too much.

Asking questions in an inquisitive manor, as to learn, is one thing.
Asking questions in a manor that implies you know more than the person you hired(even if you do) is what drives many techs to shut down. I have walked on a couple occasions because the customer was demeaning in his questions and actions. Both times he was given at least 3 chances to change the attitude before i moved on. The customer is NOT always right.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals". Their stated reason for this policy "... the animals become dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

So far so good (Knock on wood), no issues with cooling or freezing since the Tech topped off the freon yesterday. Cooled through the rest of the day, night and today just fine. Will update when they come back to replace the coil, and when/if I can get someone out to take a static pressure reading and see what (if) we can really do to get this system running right.
