Had a service call years ago on a walk in cooler, went on the roof, couldn’t find the condensing unit anywhere on the roof, looked over the edges of the roof, nothing, kept looking and looking, eventually found that critter inside a large RTU ( like the one in this photo ) it was in the return duct side. The walk in cooler condensing unit was smaller in size…than that one.

Now that's ingenuity and stupidity mixed in equal parts.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

Stuff like that is so common in the Carolina's It's not worth paying attention anymore. I like the suction line coiled up like a slinky on the roof. Just make it cool. Now with that being said. if the compressor is bad I will fix a suction line like that and not even mention it to the customer.( include that in the compressor price) I'm constantly repairing, replacing or adding controls. Seems like there is never a working low pressure control. The high pressure control is bypassed. used to be a defrost clock who knows where it is now. Fan cycle... what is that? ( cap tube is most always cut off the head master and leaking) Condenser is never clean.

If a customer is on a P.M. contract we will note and give a price for these repairs. They usually turn them down. All they want is filters changed and be on the preferred customer list which is a joke in the summer time.

Things like this keep us busy and earning a paycheck so it's all good. Keep rolling Brother

So the plywood's a little crooked and the unit is not square on the 4x4s. Give the guy a break it was probably bumped by some other trade that was up there.

This is on one roof I work on. I don't work on this unit but I'm up there right now waiting on it load of parts so I can fix some of the other units.

I'm sort of surprised that it got a 90 rather than the more traditional kink.

Are you sure it's a Chinese Restaurant? Where is all the grease and oil puddled and running everywhere?

You would not have noticed it was a 90, ( a long radius 90 at that ) or a kink if not for the insulation rotting off…

Novice idea, many positives thou, away from the elements ( New England weather ) didn’t need a head master control, had its own protection kit, if it had a CCH and it failed who cares it’s still warm in there, RTU was large so the duct was large enough to disparate the heat from the condenser. It was bolted into place from moving. Not sure how the lineset/electrical ran, thinking inside the return duct. One less roof penetration I suppose. As mentioned the unit was smaller than the 1st photo…didn’t say it was code/legal just a quirky service calls in life you don’t soon forget, in regards to not snapping a photo,…that was years before the cell photo thing…can’t say I carried a throwaway camera around either
