Oversized compressor

I put an under sized compressor in my ac and it works surprisingly well. I don't think oversized would work quite as well.

Mine just almost accounted for the damage to the condenser coil so I think I didn't gain any efficiency I just lost capacity. Before this craziness with the copper prices I was planning on changing the system out but now I'm thinking I waited a bit too long.

How much oversized?

It can be fine, but you need to observe the system reading and some extra refrigerant is needed.

Power consumption will be increased, also delivered capacity will increase.

I would recommend ask for compressor performance sheet and it will show you all changes.

But donÂ’t go far in over sizing. Also as folks mentioned check if this violating any code.

dont forget to check the electrical components if still fit or need to oversize also.

We’ve put an smaller compressor on a custom designed heating and cooling unit in a condo and surprisingly it’s working just fine. There’s a shortage of parts and we’ll replace all those old units shortly, anyway.

I can speak 1st hand that unless the metering device and air volume will support the compressor capacity, it will run much lower then desired evap saturation.

Have a hard time starting without equalized pressure, and likely to freeze up.

Had a condo with a 2 ton unico type indoor that another guy installed a 3 ton condenser on.

Hard to keep above 15 degree saturation.

The fix was a compressor that matched the indoor unit.

This is two size bigger! It will be no superheat, regardless we match the measuring device with outdoor unit or not, that’s a mess for sure, thanks for sharing anyway.

Let's not forget about humidity issues. It has to run long enough to maintain humidity control. 80 degrees @ 45-50 relative humidity feels much better than 73 degrees@80%rh...

It had a TXV and did maintain SH, just the evaporations pressure was too low to keep anything above freezing
