    Zone Damper Motor Temperature

How hot should a zone damper motor (spring open, powered closed) get while it is being held closed?

I have a damper that is very hot to the touch. It also squeaks really bad when releasing open. I am beginning to think the two issues are related.

So I had the damper replaced under warranty and the terrible squeaking stopped for 3 or 4 days and now the terrible squeaking is back and the damper motor is too hot to touch. Can anyone verify this is normal for a spring open, held closed damper? The dampers in question are Aprilaire.

It does seem to be that 2 of my 3 dampers are getting extremely hot to the touch but only 1 of the 3 is annoying noisy when springing open.

Final update if this does indeed happen to anyone else or for just my avid fans following this riveting thread.....

I sent an email to Aprilaire and they actually called me back. Turns out these 2-wire dampers will typically run around 140F which seems about right for what I am feeling. They recommended changing to 3-wire damper if I wanted cooler running motors. Then I got a lesson on how 3-wire dampers operate and they do sound nice. I might look into those when it comes time to replace my existing ones.
