Flowing nitrogen while brazing
How many of y’all actually flow nitrogen while brazing because every single installer/technician I’ve met in the past 5 years has never done it.

Why wouldn't they ? Do they not pressure test as well ?
Point being, if you're going to bring out the nitro anyways.
Have there been times I haven't ? Sure, but that was a repair where the refrigerant was still out gassing.

new installs get it 100% of the time.
small systems, any repair gets it 100% of the time.
large systems, varies.....depends on how much is being done.
I only do commercial, so I rarely deal with residential stuff......I consider anything under 5 tons to be small, so no matter what kind of repair, it gets nitro.
Think of it this way. As a professional, you should be using Industry Best Practices. Those dictate that ANY brazing on ANY system, should be done while purging with nitrogen. So who cares what anyone else does, do it right, and sleep better at night!

Recommended. But if oxygen flow to the inside is blocked and the pipe is not overheated brazing will not cause carbonizing inside of the pipe and no discoloration.
Larger pipes this becomes more difficult. When using nitrogen open pipes should be blocked or blanked so that nitrogen flow is restricted to a minimum. Pipe should not have any pressure.

do you have any of those pics from your Japan trip?
I was floored seeing the insides of those pipes brazed without nitrogen. I had no clue it was even possible to control your brazing heat like that. Those guys are AMAZING!!

From Daikin International skills competition in Japan. First 3 place competitors, 0hp rods, no nitrogen, near perfection.

I always flow nitrogen except for when I run out at inopportune times like Friday at 5:15.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

Installs 100% of the time.
Repairs depends on how much piping is being redone, and agree no need with S B #8

I generally do, just depends on the situation.

Every installer/technician you've said you met for the last 5 years was WRONG.
Every technician you've met for the last 5 years, wasn't.

Getting the nitro reg that clicks into the different settings for psi test , braze etc. was a game changer for me makes it so easy to flow while brazing. I used SB8 for a year or two but lately it seems like all the linesets I get are slightly out of round and it’s much harder to correct that with solder. I’m back to brazing everything again and happy with it. The only difference for me is having to drag a real torch around instead of the MAP gas, oh well though not that big a deal. The MC tank makes it easier but the gas doesn’t last long with a big tip.

I do because that's how I was taught. One of the things about HVAC I've learned is that the equipment can work even if it was poorly installed or repaired and it's entirely up to you as the professional if you are fine with that equipment failing before its time. Personally I don't want to see my customers any sooner than necessary but that's just me.

Those at the Daikin Japanese skills competition are hacks! The guy who did the same thing on his garbage can lid in a long azz N2 thread somewhere around here is a hack too!
WRONG WRONG WRONG Oh my these hacks should be ashamed and banished from HVAC Island!

Hardly. The best US brazer came in 57th. They typically do brazing on production lines, well trained and had mentors. Plenty of practice. Competition is judged on time & quality. Would like to see how they would have done on larger pipe.
