Some matchup help please....guys, please :).

So, I have an existing 3.5T Lennox coil and heat pump that I am replacing. The existing coil is 20" tall. Unfortunately, my Rheem matchup to an RP1442 is a 27" tall RCF4821 coil.

I looked on AHRI, and it shows an RCF3624 as a matchup but looks like that one either isn't made anymore, or that Gensco doesn't supply it? Ruud?

Anyway, I can get an RCF3621, but shows nominal tonnage at 3 tons. Am I getting myself in trouble going this route? Anybody have any better ideas on a 3.5 ton matchup that I can use a 20" tall coil on? I can't get Lennox stuff but I can get just about any other manufacturer. Looks like even the Aspen and Mortex coils are 24" or taller.

    Thoughts?

Is there absolutely not room to cut a few inches off the plenum?

I know sometimes there is not, just curious how dire the situation is.

If you can do an uncased coil, Im pretty sure that ADP has coils that are 19” tall in 3.5 ton.

If you’re talking AHRI, I cant help you there.

The AHRI testing is paid for by the OEM. And they may only test what they produce themselves, or only one coil for all I know.

ADP is owned by Lennox. So I would think Lennox may test their equipment against them. But I dont know.

Back to your original post, that second coil you stated you can get, if its a listed AHRI match, then thats good enough no?

Let me guess what you didn’t post.....old system is R-22...so the coil is shorter because it’s a lower speed refrigerant...
The R410a is larger being a higher speed refrigerant needing more surface area for the same output..

Or a compact/smaller matching AH instead of just coil

Oh, and now just checked. The outdoor units stop at 036. No higher.

Sell them a new furnace if it would be shorter then existing.

If not, then in the past when I worked for a York dealer and all the coils where 3 ft tall.

On occasion I would remove from the case, make a new plenum, and then extend the top of the A up into the trunk an inch or so to make if fit.

Way less then ideal. I always told the boss it would have been better to use an aftermarket coil.

But he had the must be AHRI syndrome.

Ironically, once a cased coil is removed from the case, its not technically a match anymore, or it derates the seer, cause they assume the plenum is un insulated.

I just don't like unmatched coils with heat pumps. Askin for trouble. Try ADP as suggested before. We have done it, but you kinda gotta throw the T&P chart out, and can expect high subcooling in the cooling mode, like 18 or 19 degrees sometimes. Hope it works out bro.

I have decided to just pull the furnaces and restack them. This is adding a day to the project, but I was able to go back to the customer and get more money out of him. I need to redo the god-awful transitions above that the previous guy did anyway.

I have another thread on this about the Emme zoning that is attached to these systems. The furnaces are twinned, the heat pumps have a silly twinning kit for them as well. The Emme zoning has this stupid air pump/logic system that has these stupid bladders to every heat run, it is way way way way over-engineered.

I wish he had the coin to do some real zoning and get rid of the Emme garbage but that isn't happening.
