My funky pool plumbing. First edition.
I'm buying a house and one of the cool things is it comes with a fiberglass above ground pool and a brand new pump.
Of course I needed to plumb it up so this is my first attempt and I definitely got a few things crooked but I think everything seals other than the multi-position valve on top of the filter which is going to have to be replaced because it is thrashed.
The pipe sticking over the top edge with a cap on it is going to have some holes drilled in it to spray water up into the air at night to cool the pool if that ever becomes necessary and I'm sure also as a fountain for the kids to play in.
I don't like the current location of the filter but for this year it is going to have to be good enough. Eventually I want to move the filter about 50 ft from where it is and seal up the current skimmer and discharge holes and put the connections on the other end of the pool to be closer to where I will have the pump located. The reason for that change is to have the pump under a roof. When I do that I will also be upgrading to 2-in plumbing but I wanted this done today and the filter and poolside terminations are 1.5" so I used 1.5".
How did I do?

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

After I finished I realized that if I put a few more unions in different spots it would have made everything a lot easier to line up but I didn't realize that until I was done.
I still have to wire it into a GFCI breaker but I spent too much money on plumbing parts today so that's going to have to wait till next week.

Looks good, it will work fine. No need for the 2” plumbing, unless your running a 2 hp pump or bigger.
I'm not young enough, to know everything...

It will be longer runs but the pump is 1.5 hp.

I'm just heading to the store to pick up a breaker and some wire and I will get to test this sucker out. Hopefully the pump still works after sitting for a few years it was brand new in the box unopened but I reached in the impeller housing and I couldn't turn the motor so hopefully I can get it working.

I just ran a quick jumper cord with some Romex and it does indeed run. Now I need to get my GFCI and everything to hook it up properly.

It turns out the pump is way too powerful for the filter so I installed a bypass. That second picture is how much water I have to bypass to keep the pressure to the filter at 15 psi.

And this is the fountain I built for cooling the pool at night when the water is getting too hot in the summer. I've read of people doing this that were able to cool the pool up to 10° below ambient.

It is amazing how quickly a decent filter system can clean up a pool.
I am barely even chlorinating and it is clear. I still need to vacuum up the paint flakes on the bottom and plumb in the second filter I just got but I think I am going to be able to keep it clean this year. I think I enjoy working on the pool more than swimming.

Update: I have power run in conduit half way from the breaker panel to the pump and the 20 amp double pole GFCI breaker should come in on Monday.
I used the disconnect with an external handle so I don't have to open the lid to shut down the pump in an emergency.
I have to pick up a bit more conduit and wire it up.

I'm slowly getting there. I just got it protected with a GFCI today.
Those double pole 20 amp gfcis are expensive.
