More betta cheddar here. It used to be the norm to have 3 "homes" in IN,IL an Wisco. Collect from the Man from 3 states. Then the Man started talking to each of his Brothers and cut off collecting from all 3. Wisco has betta bennies so "movin on up" they came. They will run for the border in a moments notice. FIBland had the death penalty. Wisco didn't. Just yesterday one of the transplant stole a Ford Escape while the preggo Mom was filling her tires at a gas station. Ran her over. Bet ya $100 he back in da hood in Chitcago. When 75 % thinks these transplants are the greatest thing since spreadable cheese spread, rinse and repeat. 13 year old crotch fruits with ankle bracelets go around stealing cars from the dumb azz 75% that leave the keys in their cars. Cops smile and wave and keep repeating "there's no threat to the public" as gunfights in broad daylight on a six lane highway between 2 stolen cars fighting for turf. They just took the plywood down from the downtown shopping street after the 9 month siege by the woke crowd. The 75% have plenty of money for buying drugs so I guess supplying market demand by street pharmacists is all the resume they need. What did the 75% do after one of the transplants went around the burned/boarded up shops with a bull horn and baseball bat extorting "protection money" do when they nailed him? They burned and rioted and tore down a statue of a civil war hero tate died in battle for their rights.
    What's you exit plan?

What does the employer do when they are now short handed, especially with only a few employees.

It would be extremely short sighted just to get rid of the tech and hire someone new in most cases.

HVAC/R community isn't that big in most places. Word gets around quick if employees are treated as disposable commodities. Good luck getting the top tier techs if you get that label attached. Same goes for techs as well....top companies are not going to hire the lazy hacks either if they get that label.

I had good tech out nearly 6 months includeing all summer. He got sick and was misdiagnosed with leukemia but after lots of treatments was sent to yet another specialist that figured out he had a bad spleen. I only had 4 guys at the time so what I had to do was just work longer . Went to office very early then ran calls or built sheetmetal etc until late. Subbed a few jobs and actually had to just back out on a few. I paid him until he could draw unemployment, which here is 100% on the employer.
Being rural I tried to add another guy as I didn't know when or if he would come back. Very hard to do. Actually hired 2 different " super techs " that neither could do anything on thier resumes. One actually tells me after getting 1st paycheck he needed to be paid in cash so it didn't mess up his unemployment check. I immediatly made sure I didn't mess it up by working for me. No tech is indispensable,

You may also consider splitting your paternity leave. I know a lot of fellas at work are doing this. Take 2 weeks at the beginning, help out your wife while she is recovering. Then take the rest off when she goes back to work and have some quality one on one time with the baby.

I got family in CA.. they got alot of benefits by the goverment. Anyways ya I wouldn't sweat it.. if all goes to hell you will find another job. You may also want to consider working at a University or some school system. I bet they got way better benefits but I'm sure the pay will be lesser. Working for some school system I bet you will have more free time then bending over backwards for your current company. Lifes too short man better be happy then miserable for must of your life.

Public schools/Universities in Canada usually pay their techs significantly less per hour than a decent tech can make working for a private company and can usually get decent benefits from a private company, which is why they are always hiring.

One university near me has had an ad up looking for a tech for the last 5 years.

I interviewed for a building maintenance job the company owned dozens of apartment buildings and rental houses and they wanted me to handle all the heating and cooling systems plus be on call 24/7 for the princely sum of $17.50/h.

I agree. I just had an employee split his Paid Parent into 2 days on and 3 days off. That way he still gets work done and still is home most of the week.

That doesn’t work in Canada. Where is he located that allows that?
Quickly, I must hurry, for there go my people and I am their leader!
