I have a few compressors kicking around

probly out of ice makers ?

    AKA9438ZXA

    AKA9415ZXA

    RST45C1E-IAA-959

    RS43C1E-IAA-101

    I think all are 404A

Can I use any with 134A for 2 door or 3 door reach-in coolers ??

What would the BTU's drop to ?

Pumps don’t care about what there pumping.
Download the performance curves and see if it has the capacity.
Your going to loose 30 - 40% capacity with 134A

Apparently I am not the only compressor hoarder.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

So like the AKA9438ZXA using 404 or 407A does 3800 BTU's at 20 deg evap with 120 deg cond ...according to Tecumseh Date Sheet

    So 134A would do 40 % less ?

    So 3800 - 1520 = 2280

Why not just stay with R404a ?

Probably because his customers units are running 134 already. And doing a full conversion isn't saving anyone money in the short term.
I do like 404 for cap tube systems. Never seen one wax up yet.
But going from low temp 404 to high temp 134 should be close enough on suction pressure that they'd work ok

I have one little store who sells beer mostly

Im not sure what the profit on selling 6 packs of beer is , but I dont think he makes much money

He's always asking for prices on repairs and requests used parts when possible ( I dunno , maybe I got spoiled by those who say " my cooler is down , just fix it " )

But anyhow , If I can toss one of those compressors into a 2 door True , like a GDM-49 , he would be tickled , he has a bunch of them (id hate to see his elec bill )

Yeah I've done it. Usually just match up hp.
So if the true is 1/3 horse just find the one you have sitting around thats 1/3.
I been going exclusively to the tecumseh 44** series compressors in small equipment. The cost on oem embraco compared around here is outrageous.
And honest I think the tecumseh will outlast them for 1/4 the price

This 134A compressor comes in the True 2 door coolers

How would I determine which of those compressors could take its place ? ( 404A values is throwing me off )

    The AKA4460YXA with R134A at 20F/120F has a capacity of 3060 Btuh

Using 40% loss converting from R404A to R134A I get these capacities for the R404A compressors you have:

    AKA9438ZXA 3750 Btuh w/R134A = 2250 Btuh

    AKA9415ZXA 1490 Btuh w/R134A = 894 Btuh

    RS43C1E-IAA 4110 Btuh w/R134A = 2466 Btuh

RST45?C1E 4250 Btuh w/R134A = 2550 Btuh (This was the closest model I could find to an RST43)

The closest with R134A would be the AKA9438ZXA at 2250 Btuh, but that would be short of the desired capacity by 17%. You might be better off going with R404A with the AKA9438ZXA and shorten the cap tube.

Do you think the existing Cond Coil will reject enough heat ?

I replaced a 2 door "Migali Freezer" compressor several years back , it was R12 , told the owner it may not work but I will try this , Added a second Cond Coil with its own fan , didnt change anything else , only a new compressor

    It was cap tube

Filled with 404 and shes still purring along today

If it would actually run at 20F evaporator temperature the condensing temperature would increase around 6 deg F or so, but it depends on what you do with the cap tube.

According to the Tecumseh cap tube calculator, at 20/120 the cap tube for 3750 Btuh of R404A needs to be about 1/2 the length of what it is for 3060 Btuh of R134A, for example 6ft vs 11 ft. If the cap tube is left a bit longer like 8ft, you would expect to see a lower suction temperature, a lower capacity and therefore a lower head pressure. It's like a Poodlehead FrankenMod with his EPR tricks.

I suspect your Migal Freexer fix succeeded in much the same way, since the existing R12 cap tube would have been much too long for the R404A and so the suction was throttled enough to do the job.

4 pages so its a little painful lol

We can do it again !

During this Frankenstein , you suggested some cap tube ideas , but I was tired from working 14 hour days , and said screw it , Im trying it with the cap tube thats currently there , I just got really lucky

This same beer store has a 3 door cooler I frankened as well because he was crying " Its too big to move out of here"

Its also a True , but it was Waxed

Couple of years ago I had this used condenser sitting around , but it wouldnt fit under the cooler , so I re-located it onto shelving next to the cooler

Ok so , this store always has AC problems and sometimes will get 90 degrees , so I thought , why dont I upgrade the coil now !

So I fitted a condenser Coil from a Ice Machine with its own fan !

Replaced the waxed Cap tube , and kept shortening it until I got the suction temps I liked ( that was painful )

I will get pics of that when I go back

I like your style. I love it when people are willing to intelligently Frankenstein something.

I didnt take pics of todays swap because it looks like a normal compressor swap

So , I was only able to remove 3 feet from about the 8 feet total of Cap Tube , so its like 5 feet now

    14 oz 404A , Pressures 250 and 42 , ambient like 70 , and like 45 deg in box

Didn't check SH yet , I want the box to be down to 36

    Head seems a bit high

I will check more stuff in the morning
