The company puts your name on the patent? Its nice you get credit the grand doesn't hurt either.
Interesting phenomenon, wondered how many others have seen it's effect first hand.
I have worked for major aerospace company for 54 years. In first 50 year received only 4 patents, had submitted dozens of invention ideas, company owns all patents and they do the legwork, etc. If company applies for patent, 99% probability of patent being granted.
Now, just in this last year (2020) there were 12 applications with my name. 2019 IIRC 5.
Pretty much ascribe this to patent trolls, company want to protect all IP with patents vs. trade secret.
Anyone with similar experiences? NOt complaining, we get a $1000 check for each patent at time it is applied for.

It might have to do with a patent only good for 14 + 3 years where a Trade Secret might not have a limit like Coke's formula.

Wow nice bonus. I have had the opposite experience, over 50 patents while working- got invited to a luncheon each time - but no payment. After retirement two more have been filed - again no payment.
Very experienced with this. I worked for a large medical company that produced knee, hip, shoulder, etc. implants. My job was to develop the tools to implant them. Often I would develop a new instrument requested by a doctor and the company always filed for a patent. We also got a check for being on the patent. Intellectual property is important to many companies.
I worked for a while at the Gillette razor company and often I would be asked to develop a product off of a competitors product. I would have to add or change simple things that sometimes didn't even have any function at all to get around their patent so we could file for our own. Crazy world we live in....

I have several patents in my name from two companies I worked for. We get a small check as well for having our name on it. Not sure why anyone would care that the company gets the patent since you're being paid on their time to develop products they spec'd. Polaroid was a company that gave a percentage for patents to their employees from what I understand. Lots of rich engineers came out of there. I say great for them.
