I have another a/c tech stopping by tomorrow to check the mini split.
If I may also ask...
This particular room was created when I put up a drywall to enclose the back @225sq ft of our long garage (the wife calls it The Cave). Thus, 3 of the 4 walls are block with no insulation. Even with a dehumidifier and an eventually-working mini split unit, will the room require either rigid insulation along the 3 block walls, or foam piped into the spaces inside the blocks in order to completely be rid of the musty odor that always seems to linger?

As a follow-up, I did have the mini split checked out by an old-timer who has been in the trade for 40 years. He just left me a message to say that the system was only a little bit low on freon; that he charged it up and it's blowing ice cold. He said the leaks on those are hard to locate, but if that's all it has lost in 3-4 years, his advice is to stay the course.
Cost: $69

If that will last you another year or two. That will get you by until youre financially ready to replace the whole system.
Best of luck!!!

Unfortunately the only way to test a mini split is to pull and weigh the charge and compare to the factory charge.

I have found quite a few leaks in the flare connections. A little oil on the threads and two open end wrenches helps that problem. Ask the teck to check for leaks after he recharges the system. The stop leak that we have now does a better job. But try never to use it. Good luck

Just got home to find that the room in question is nice and cool, and with the dehumidifier hooked up, it will hopefully mean less strain on the mini-split.
Right now the room is at 69Ί with 40% humidity: no smell of musty air at all. What is the "optimum" humidity level?

Anything less than 50 is good.
Member teddy bear is real good at answering humidity and fresh air questions.

Now consider what your going to do. It Is Not fixed, it has a band aid. You need someone that Will find the location of the leak and advise. I wouldn't wait too long, compressors do not like to run short of refrigerant!
