How many heat exchangers in Thor 16-20 years?

Between two and three.

 

Standard light commercial line I see them last 20-25 on the high side, on average around 20. Not different from any other standard RTU

On the applied side like the 48AK quite a bit longer I found.

 

Some clients have us repair 30 and 35 year old systems.

I don't know what metric most folks would use to determine a lifespan of a unit.

If it were up to me, I would suggest replacement at about 17 years, and when they decide to do it a year later, it would be about right. My factors are corrosion and general wear.

 

Tranes and carriers are 90%+ of what I see commercially. The ones I consider young are anything from 2000-on, lots still from the 90s, smattering from the 80s. And two 25 ton units I found from the probably early 70s. Those two are in my personal care. Most are several compressors from the original. Seen building owners spend 2x-3x the price of a new unit, on all their repairs over the years. Does that qualify as reliable? Honestly, I don’t know if it counts, because as long as you can get parts for it their going to fix it. Mentioning replacement is usually like peeing into the wind

 

The life cycle expectation depends on the customer.

We have clients who will decline to change a heat exchanger on a unit over 8 years old and instead replace the whole unit.

And of course we have other customers with units that are 30 years old, condenser is completely smashed, paint is peeling off and the metal is rusting away but they consider the unit to be a perminant fixture and will keep it forever.

That said, I personally agree with the OP’s 16 to 20 year span.
