IMF says the global economic expansion is losing momentum as it cuts growth forecasts

In October, the IMF cut its global growth forecasts on the back of increased trade tariffs between China and the United States.
It said the latest revision is due in part to carry over from last year, mentioning weakness for German auto manufacturers due to new fuel emission standards, and soft domestic demand in Italy after recent sovereign and financial risks.

"Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the IMF's Managing Director Christine Lagarde said: "After two years of solid expansion, the world economy is growing more slowly than expected and risks are rising. But even as the economy continues to move ahead ... it is facing significantly higher risks."

Trump says he may not stick to March deadline on China tariffs

Trump says he is open to extending China trade deadline

    49 Mins Ago | 03:58

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he would consider postponing the March 2 deadline for tariffs if the U.S. and China can reach a trade deal soon.

Trump softened his stance on the trade battle with China, saying he's open to letting the deadline slide, but "would prefer not to." He also said Beijing "very much wants to make a deal," and he has "a big team" in China trying to reach a resolution.

When asked if he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of March, Trump said, "Not at this point."

The March 2 deadline is crucial in the negotiations as U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods will increase if a deal is not struck before then. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin along with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer headed to Beijing this week for another round of talks with Vice Premier Liu He. The trade talks still seemed far apart as the two sides have not even drafted an accord specifying the matters they agree and disagree on.

White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said Thursday that there is a "pretty sizable distance to go" before China and the U.S. reach a deal. Kudlow also indicated, however, that Trump is "optimistic with respect to a potential trade deal."

Mnuchin said last week the talks have been "very productive," although he noted that a "wide range of issues" remains to be worked out.

White House Reportedly Caves On Cybertheft Demands As Trump Seeks Trade Deal At Any Cost

    by Tyler Durden
    Tue, 04/30/2019 - 17:25

"For weeks now, those who can see past the White House's 'cautious optimism' regarding the potentiality of the ongoing trade talks with Beijing have probably understood that the year-long trade war with China could end one of two ways: Either Trump walks away from the deal, risking a brutal correction in stocks (which, according to some, is the only barometer of his performance in office that matters to Trump) or cave on several of the administration's most unpalatable demands.

So far, the White House has already purportedly punted on enforcement (though nothing is set in stone) and backed away from demands that Beijing scrap industrial subsidies.

And according to a just-released report in the FT, Trump has instructed his negotiators, who are presently engaged in talks in Beijing, to drop a demand that China halt the instances of cybertheft that have become such a widely publicized point of contention between China and the West."

It isn't surprising a trade deal or any deal with China takes a while. They are fierce negotiators and if they think they have the upper hand nearly impossible. The problem they have with Trump is he knows we have the upper hand.

I may not have said this, so I will say it now.

The Chinese leadership live in daily fear of one thing: a true revolution. An uprising of millions of disgruntled citizens. They have thousands coming in from the farm provinces every month, and they must build, build, build to accommodate them, and their approach to trade grows out of the need for jobs for this growing mass of city people.

Trump knows how much the chicoms need to trade with US. He fully understands their manipulation of their currency and their abuses of foreign investment, the worst of which is the theft of intellectual property.

I think that he is more than capable of making the best deals he can with a slippery eel of a trade partner. No one before him has really cared about this issue.

    Time,

There is far more data available proving that Trump in employing his "Art of the Deal", is greatly wavering in his demands of China, while proclaiming "MAGA!".

"If", what is being "leaked" proves to be the Trade Agreement, ..... China will be given till 2025 to correct it's Trade Practices, with the Tariffs placed upon China, being lifted immediately.WTH?!?

This "Trade War", not only with China, but even with many of Our Allies, is beginning to take the form of a "Perfect Storm", that could possibly wreck America's Economy. America's Farmers are nearing the level of Bankruptcies that occurred back in the 1980s. To compound the problem they have with a loss of Exports, ... They also are facing Unprecedented & Catastrophic Flooding that has inundated Croplands, as well as drowned hundreds of thousands of of cattle, hogs, chickens & other livestock.

Worse yet, ... These Tariffs & Sanctions, have caused many nations, both Allies & Enemies, to seek other ways to Trade with each other, in other Currencies, ther than the Dollar, & outside of Financial Institutions such as SWIFT.

Trump, without having the Political Finesse that Ronald Reagan had, .... Has Bullied his way in to several building Catastrophes that may well be FUBARED, that his "Business Experience" will not be able to correct.

Also keep in mind, ... Trump's Dad, can not "Bail him out", as he has done in the past, & America, will end up suffering for it.
