SpaceX’s next Starship starts to take shape as Elon Musk talks next steps
    Eric Ralph- August 6, 2020
    .
Less than a day after SpaceX successfully hopped a full-scale Starship prototype for the first time, the company has begun stacking the next rocket and Elon Musk is talking next steps.

Almost immediately after Starship SN5 took to the sky on a 150m (500 ft) hop debut, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was talking about the company’s next near-term goals for the next-generation launch vehicle’s test program. To an extent, he had already offered a rough overview through various interviews and tweets over the last year or so. Aside from continuing to gradually refine Starship and Super Heavy designs and the processes used to manufacture and test those rockets, a few major proofs of concept stand between SpaceX and total confidence in the current architecture.

I wonder if they could put a space elevator on Mars, with a Space Lab as the cable tether. They said it would be hard to do one on Earth as it would have to be near the Equater, and the severe storms would tear apart the whole apparatus. BTW I read an article years ago about how they would put an atmosphere on Mars. They would dump Fluorocarbons and CO2 into Mars present atmosphere. Interesting because those are two problematic substances on earth.

Mars is a better candidate for a space elevator, not just because of its thin atmosphere, but because of its lower gravity. The centrifugal force required to sustain the orbit of the weight on the end of the tether would be subsantially lower. Mars gravity is only 38% of Earth's. And a day there is 24 hours 37 minutes, so there's not much difference in angular (rotational) velocity.

But from what I have read about Martian atmosphere, the air there just bleeds off into space. So for the time being, domes and underground habitats will be the norm.

    Slightly Old News:

Next Starship test flight to go to 60,000 feet
    September 14, 2020
    .
SpaceX has decided, after two successful 500 foot hops using its fifth and sixth Starship prototypes, to forego further hops with those prototypes and instead test fly prototype number eight to a height of 60,000 feet, about 11 miles.
    .
Starship SN5 and SN6 were set to become a tag-team, flying 150-meter hops to refine the launch and landing techniques that SpaceX has pioneered with its Falcon 9 rocket. However, with SN5’s hop proving to be a success, followed by a notable improvement with SN6’s leap to 150 meters a few weeks later, it’s likely SpaceX is now confident of advancing to the next milestone.

The company has applied for an FCC license to do the flight anytime from Oct ’20 to April ’21, with October 11th being the first available date.

In the meantime the company plans a pressure tank test to failure of prototype #7, probably later this week.
