Seriously though is there a need to ream and file with the double flare? Looks like the outside of the tubing needs the attention. That one that is finished doesn't look like the surface was hardly smoothed and looks real rough

You have to push on a square edge to get a square flare.

It's not what you're capable of doing that defines you, it's what you do on a daily basis.

That was just a scrap in the bottom of a bucket. I did not ream it or clean the pipe at all. I do not file the end on a double flare, but I do ream it, maybe more out of habit than anything.

My understanding double flares were for stainless steel brake lines to decrease the possibility of vibration fractures. But what ever works for ya. BTW A step bit reams nice.

On Copeland condensing units they used to double flare suction line, don't know if they still do. But, interestingly enough, not the discharge line.

Then you probably don't work with hard copper much. I have used the pre made flares many times when working with hard copper. They have always worked good for me.

Why wouldn't you just anneal it, and make your own?
I've never even seen a "pre made" flare for sale.....

I thought double flares were pants from the 70s!

Kidding aside, never saw a double flare before. Interesting post.

Maybe if they were double flares I'd consider it. But as Kramer said, I just anneal the copper. Like when I have to bend hard drawn, I anneal it first. For bending, probably even faster to anneal. Unless the job is spec'd out for those calcium silicate pipe supports and fiberglass insulation, you need sharp 90's to fit the insulation 'fittings', so it pays to take more time to cut and fit the pipe with copper fittings then braze it up.

Once in awhile I'll get through a whole day without learning something. But not very often!

Yeah, it's a great little kit. I've seen all sorts of other gadgets through the years. In fact, you might say I like all of those other gadgets. Since I go behind those others to fix all of the leaks with my double flares, LOL. Easy money.

I'm just the kind of guy that finds what works, then keep doing that over and over. Sure, I'm always trying a little this or a little that to up my game. But for something so basic as a flare . . . I haven't made a regular flare in over 30 years; and haven't had a leak at a flare in that same amount of time.

If I find something better, well, we'll cross that bridge when we get there. But it has to be simple, small, cheap, and more reliable than a double flare . . . LOL !!

I've seen refrigeration equipment manufactures use double flares as well. Mostly on sae pressure switches. I personally use them when I'm splicing a brake line on a vehicle.

    Cool.
I believe the Double Flair had to do with,
    1.Steel Line.
    2.PSIG.
Steel is Very easy to 'split' and,
Brake lines psig is a LOT higher than what we use,as in close to 1K depending on the application, and I have split many with a standard flaring block but,
    I SEE the Point BB.
I personally have never done a Double in Refrig and, likely never will. But,
I am Irish and have Good Luck.
