Natural gas here, Kansas City area. Oderant can vary in type and
concentration I assume. The MSDS on methly mercaptan lists warnings
    of certain metals including copper.

The line in my house may have been 20yrs old, and the flake in the
7ft line could have filled a 1" cap.

I've only seen soft copper on branches to water heaters and stoves
    using flare fittings around here.

Are the copper mains you mention at least brazed? Surprising how regions
would be so different. Interested to see what you find...

In the midwest brazed type l copper is normal in homes. I find it odd that so many here are so surprised at its use. Sizing charts and codes for copper gas line are in the national fuel gas code. Pro-Press has come out with copper fitting for use with gas lines. I have seen way more copper that black iron, and am starting to see more csst.

I like that you left the xr14 label on the outdoor unit. I am guessing he was told he was getting the xr14? and got the xb instead?

Copper nat gas lines used to be illegal in Calif. The Mechanical code says it's OK, plumbing code says no.

    Go figure

Since copper was always legal for propane, they've allowed its use for natural gas here for about 20 years now, but it has to be certified for gas use... Brazed ACR is a no-no. I still don't like copper on gas.

When you go on price alone, that's how you end up feeling... all alone.

    Thumbs up

Nice re - installation. Yea that copper gas line scares me. I probably would have put the furnace up on 2" patio blocks to keep off the damp floor but still a great job.

    Nice restall

Just out of curiosity, in the picture of "Old Sloppy Lineset", there's a pile of extension cord wrapped up between the floor joists, laying on top the water pipes, that looks like it may be an eddy meltdown fire hazard in the works depending on what they do with it. Did that get removed or was it still there when you left?

Nice, if that engineer was as savy as he thought he was... he would have checked model numbers that were installed and refused payment. But based on my experience with enrineers at my work and how they manage projects... this doesn't suprise me one bit. They assume because it say one thing on a PO or a set of drawings... that this is what they get installed.

Copper gas line has been used here for many years, matter of fact, in my neighborhood, we have copper from the ground to the meter... Most of the house was built in the mid. to late 60's.

Outdoor copper pinch-off loops prior to the meter have been mandatory here since they took the meters out of the basements. Copper lines after the meter have been legal for about 15 or 20 years. I'm not a fan. LP use with copper has always been legal because of the internal valve safety shut-offs. I don't think NG meters have the same safeties.

A friends cottage burned down to the ground some years ago, lines and all, leaving the 400lb LP tank 75% full after the fire because of the safeties.
