Lol, I've used the bed of my truck on numerous occasions. Probably not too safe but sometimes you just gotta get-r-dun. That is lazy since his ext ladder is right there.

It would seem to me that the bed of your pick-up might be a little sturdier than the top of that guy's van. Either way, now that I look at the picture a little closer, I see that it looks like there might be a chain going around his other ladders. Maybe he lost the key or something? What ever. Even if he wasn't doing what he is doing, it seems odd that he would have practically every size and type and color of ladder strapped to the top of his truck. I'll bet his Little Giant and his 2 ft. and 3 ft. step ladders are on the inside.
Bet the disconnects are bypassed, something is shorted and the roof is energized. Double insulation, truck tires and fiberglass. Why anyone would have a aluminim ladder on the truck is beyond me, touch something with that and your hair stands up and your rocks drop on the ground. Bad day.

Aluminum ladders are lighter and sturdier and last longer. If you take a couple of seconds to look around before setting up your ladder (which you should probably do anyways) you should be able to avoid electrocuting yourself with one.
I think some of these painters pride themselves with how many ladders they can get on a van before it tips over, or has to go through a weigh station. lol
Looks like 7 if you count the one against the building. I bet there is another 6 footer we can't see set up at the back of the van allowing him to get on the van roof.
Did a Dome in NY, had a S65 boom lift, was shy 12ft to spot on dome ceiling panal so worker puts up a 12 ft step ladder into boom bucket and between boom 65ft and ladder 12 ft and his stupidity was able to reach the dome ceiling spot we worked on, wobbly, no harness and sick!! www.greaterbinghamtonsportscomplex
Just consider for a moment. The guy has been to a job in that area before. That time he used the extension ladder and had someone steal it while he was on the roof.
Never had anyone try it on me, but I did have the wind steal one on me once. Nothing like trying to instruct a 5' nothing woman on the mechanics needed to put a 24' aluminum extension ladder back up.
Use the biggest hammer you like, pounding a square peg into a round hole does not equal a proper fit.
All he needs now is OSHA to drive by.
This reminds me of one I saw...
Now that would be a little freaky to climb
I see the cable and phone guys doing this all the time. If you look closely at the ladder they use, you'll see that the end that is on the wire actually has two hooks on it. The ladder is pretty secure at that point. Now if the wire breaks, that's something different, but I guess that never happens, since they all do it like this.
