Unit running but no air blowing

The AC guy is coming out here tonight, but I'm so incredibly nervous that this is going to cost big bucks. We're putting the house on the market next month, and I really don't want to pour a ton of money into the house.

The house is always hot - the unit runs constantly during the summer. However, today, it was hotter than usual. Checked each of the vents and no air was blowing out at all, however, the unit was running.

No ice, filter had just been changed, the "insulated pipe" that he asked me to check was relatively cool - the pipe (no insulation) that was attached to it was ice cold.

He did tell me that the unit is two small for the house - it's a 2 ton when they should have put in at least a 2 1/2, probably a 3.

So, any chance this is just freon?? Or am I looking at buying a new unit??

For whatever the reason, it sounds like your blower(either on furnace or air handler) is not functioning. I would check this out. You might want to see if a breaker has tripped. My advice though is to shut the complete system down ASAP.

Post back and let us know what tech says this evening.

IMO
Good LucK!

Thanks! I did shut it down this morning when I realized it, but I think it had already been doing it for about 12 hours before I realized it.

It sure is hot today!!

If there could be one thing a home owner could learn from me it would be

If the a/c isn't cooling, turn it off.....Period

It isn't going to magically come on, if it is off due to low airflow and ice buildup on the evap you have started the process to make it easier for me to repair your equipment. saves me time and you money.

If it is off for say thermal overload tripping in the compressor or condenser fan motor by turning it off you may save yourself some big bucks. Could possibly save your existing equipment and save you money.

Turn it off

Well - I'm stumped!! The guy came out, turned the unit back on, and it's working fine! ????? I told him I swear there was not one bit of air coming out of any of the vents. I went around the whole house, climbed up on a chair and felt to see - nothing!! 8 hours later - they work fine.

The blower motor might have been seized up when you checked it the first time, and after it cooled down it came back on. Or the evap coil could have been iced up and now it works again after the ice melted.

I bet if it was one of the older board furnaces he turned off the power and turned it back on and reset the board used to have to do that on a some of the first RUUD furnaces we sold back in the early 90's man that was fun.
