Yes pecmsg molecular sieve strainer’s. Most straight cool condensers have them in liquid line after coil before liquid service valve. I always remove them when I replace compressor as they are easily plugged

That's a discharge muffler in your picture, not a filter drier.
Also, I always prefer to install driers inside right before the metering device for the same reasons already mentioned.

Discharge mufflers are empty inside although some have a check valve and some just screens/baffles.

I just pulled one out of my used parts pile to look and sure enough it's hollow. I wasn't going to reuse for fear of contamination but it's just a hollow copper thing so I will reuse it.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

Nevermind, I read your post wrong. You did say it was a rusted out muffler.

Yes was filter drier. Cut in half. Had no idea mufflers were empty inside. But come to think of it only reason I ever replaced one was because it leaked

Calcium Chloride. My father told me about making his own with pipe nipple's and lambs wool back in the Sulphur and Methyl days before Freon.
No copper, black pipe was your lineset.
And we the have it tough. I still have his old, single Guage, manifold set with a single lever valve someplace.
