Last company I worked for had a sign on bonus of $4K if you stayed there a year.
$1.5K if you got a referral who stayed there a year.
And yes, I did collect $5.5K
I do a triple evac with nitro to remove non condensables.

So
What’s the service call
What’s the hourly service rate?
-
$109 and around $28-$30 plus commission

I work in a school cooperative service serving 15 schools with 40 kitchens. Tons of work as the schools have no one and I mean no one who can fix anything. 12 holidays,3 personal days, 14 sick days 2 weeks vacation, NYS Retirement system and snow days. And we can't get anyone to apply!
There's TREACHERY AFOOT!!!
-
Yeah that’s how it is here. A county spot has been open over a year, and they can’t fill it. Very cushy gig.

The problem with school maintenance job is the on the check pay blows plus the latest retirement tiers are not that good
There is not better place for the working men than the union! 100% UA the only HVAC union!

County jobs don't pay crap...unless you are related to some republican crook at the top capable of inventing one of these "no show high pay job for you" at the water authority of bus terminal.

$48K to $52K/year is what the school district pays for HVAC tech job, average residential HVAC guys makes $10K to 20K more, the state pension used to be good 20 years ago, I think they are up to tier-7 now and that's basically a work till you drop dead 401k.

Yeah the county pension plan was pretty weak. Wasn’t impressed. Residential pulling in 75-100k plus benefits. A lot of the colleges here UofR and RIT constantly looking as well. I believe the UofR guys are in a union.

That means no applicants in 2019.
Kids can code in their mom's basement and make 50k without getting dressed. Do you think they will climb a ladder in a Rochester winter to struggle with an old York...for the same money?
That is crazy to believe that.

That decision is not mine to make. I agree with you though. We have brought in dozens of guys off the street and probably 5% have panned out. We put them through our school and all that. Just very hard we have been stuck in neutral for years now because of lack of techs.

TB, your post did make me laugh regarding the ladder in Rochester with the old York. That’s the time when I say to myself “WTF am I doing here”...

Get ready.
That 5% that the industry is seeing is going to go to 2% unless more pay and benefits are offered.
In the past 20 years, the airlines had to DOUBLE their pay for new First Officers, because no one was applying. The really motivated, smart young pilots out of Embry Riddle, Perdue U, and UND are all going military/NASA/corporate.

I can see companies paying that, dont have problems recruiting and retaining
thats just the going rate now.

Looks like the OP needs to raise his rates.
Boss sent me an email yesterday, telling me he was giving me a raise. Or maybe it was the day before. And I'm the highest paid tech where I am. I also produce more than any other tech where I currently am.
You pay low wages for cheap help, seems to me kinda difficult to grow a respectable business.
Unless you have someone like me to answer the phone when the rookies call for help, LOL.

Let me guess does this company in Rochester have all red vans with white letters lol.
