Does anybody have anything that they can tell me about becoming an HVAC technician?

Could you be a little more specific?

it's cold in the winter & hot in the summer
1) Do you love, I mean LOVE finding out how things work?
2) Do you like science?
3) Do you like doing things with your hands, besides updating your status on Twitter?
4) Do your friends ask you to fix things for you?
5) Can you feel safe on a ladder?
6) Do you have a basic understanding of what electricity is, and what it does?
7) Can you put on a set of winter garments and feel comfortable working outside all day in the cold?
8) Can you work all day in the hot sun, for 14 hours?
HVAC might be for you.

Can you handle going from 100 F outside temp to a 0 F walk in freezer, then back out to 100 F?

I notice your location is in the U.S. so I can't help you much but for any readers in Canada. Not sure if I'd recommend getting into this line of work.
I was laid off in 2009 after 8 years working in the steel industry.
I wanted to get into something that people would always need. Figured heating & cooling. Did the second career thing and the gov't paid for my retraining.
So I took Utilities System Operator which got me Gas & Oil 3 certification and I volunteered with a local company to gain experience during the summer of 2010. They were a small company only three guys and they knew their stuff. While in an attic helping insulate ductwork in the middle of august for FREE sweating so much I couldn't see really made me evaluate what I was doing :P
