Pilot is responsible for the load he is carrying , ultimately I think the riggers have made the mistake & the pilot is now wearing it.

Usually. The Sikorsky sky crane is unique in that it has third pilot who faces backwards and can take control during a lift. So he could have been in control and not the aircraft commander. Makes it a bit fuzzy

Never knew that , but Australia does not have much to do with the Sikorsky(in my area anyway).
I know some of the 1&2 pilot Rotary Wing Aircraft do have remote drop controls.
