How about... that liquid line had a leak in the ceiling they could not find, so they ran another 1/2" liquid line and left the old one.
But I really can't see the area where the 90 is that well to see if it is connected.

Maybe monitor the temperature across it when running. I'm guessing it will get very cold at the point expansion takes place if it some kind of bypass.

I think you're looking at the work of a tech who either had minimal fittings, too much time on his hands, or just a humorous streak running through him.

It was over five years ago, so can't remember the location. Thinking I could look at the time stamp on the photo then look in my log book, maybe swing by sometime. See if it's still there. I can tell you this, if I had to re-pipe things, I would do everything I could to leave that in the system!

Yes a field made suction line heat exchanger - I wonder what the pressure drop that would cause on the suction pressure. Significant I would imagine.

My guess is insignificant. At least not enough to cause much of a measurable difference in efficiency.

I'm guessing you are choking off about 50% of the area in that section. We should be able to compute the loss in efficiency. On the other hand the heat exchange could help drive up the efficiency.
Not something I would personally do on an install.

If you put a gauge on each side, you'd probably get a 1.5 psig pressure drop. Seriously. My guess is that's about it. Done a lot of empirical testing on things like this. Need more fittings and longer runs to really get a pressure drop that is significant.
