Venting / Cooling Options for Office PC
Hey All -
As many these days, I work out of my home office which is a spare bedroom on the 2nd story of our house. Due to what I do, I have a lot of computer equipment which generates a ton of heat and due to kids I must keep the door closed. Due to this, while the upstairs is a comfortable 70, my office alone averages 75 in the morning up to 89 in the afternoon. I've got 3 fans going, but know they don't actually cool the room. I'm no HVAC expert, but do know we have the upstairs & downstairs on separate units and the (brick) house is about 10 years old. We replaced our AC units about a year ago.
The best (budget-friendly) solution I can think of would be to encase the PC in an insulated material, vent it to the attic via the wall (in between studs), then install something like an attic fan near the output to pull the air. My PC is currently in a corner with two exterior walls, so would probably have to move it to an internal wall to avoid insulation.
What are your thoughts on this? Any budget-friendly suggestions or alternatives would be appreciated. We plan to sell our house within the next year, so I'd prefer that structural changes be minimal or easily reversible.
Thank You!

Why not just balance the airflow throughout the house to make sure that that room gets enough cooling. It may be that with the door closed you don't have enough return and you may need to undercut the door more or add a return transfer drill into the hallway or a return duct back to the unit.
there's some guys here that are a lot more experienced than me I'm sure they will comment shortly.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

Selling your house in a year? Window shaker AC or portable AC...

Thanks for the reply...
Never considered undercutting the door, but don't know how much that would help. The room's still about a 10 degree difference during the day on weekends when the door is open so don't think there's enough pushing it out. Perhaps if I partially close all other vents upstairs...
Thanks

Considered that, but only window is street-facing and imagine it would come down to choosing a Window AC or wife . Portable AC units which would seem enough to make a difference aren't cheap, but will consider. Thanks

It would be best if the system was checked in conjunction with adjusting the vents to make sure that you still have good airflow. I wasn't saying to undercut the door just because but it would be something to look into if it needs more return from that room. since it still has a problem with the door open I don't think that is your issue. It sounds like you need more cooling to that room so either your normal AC system needs to provide more air to that room or if that isn't doable then you need to think about a window unit or some other auxiliary cooling.

If you get a portable AC make sure to get a two hose unit the single hose ones are worthless. They take the indoor air that's already cooled and blow it through the condenser and blow it out so you're taking your pre-cooled air and wasting it which then forces more uncool air to be pulled into the room through cracks and such.
Single hose units are really just a spot cooler not air conditioning.
