Add return duct to existing central return?

I have 1986 home that's 1700sqft with a new 3 ton single stage system installed. I have a central return in the hall way with transfer grilles in the bedrooms. My return duct is undersized at 16" so I was looking to add more. The current plenums are not wide enough to accept a 18" or 20" duct so I was wondering if I can just add a 12" duct alongside the current 16" to get more flow?

If you mean add a 12" duct to the return plenum, then yes. If you mean add a 12" duct to the 16" duct, then no.

Different people have different experiences, so they have different opinions and I make no claim that my opinion has its origin in the mind greatness. - Paul Harrell
