Riding the pipe
i thought i would get your attention!
started up a chiller and everything was cool until they made some valve changes and started cavitating the chilled water pump.

Are they trying to separate the gold from the paydirt inside the pipe?

it ran like that for about 20 minutes or so. employees came over to see the start up...and then left. i thought it was hilarious. my main contact came back and then left to fix the issue. i picked up all my tools just before they got it to stop. i said that i would see them in the morning to try again. this isn't even the most bizarre thing to happen at this plant.

That can do a lot of damage to a system!

Well that shoots down the theory of Victaulic couplings won't hold up. I saw condensor piping jumping like that due to the tower sump continually vortexing air into the missing suction baffle hood. Your decision to watch this must have been a curious desire to see what came loose first.

Cavitating a chilled water pump takes a lot of energy. Damage to the pump happens quickly. With chilled water cavitation is 200 times more scary (my opinion) than hot water.
I designed a large chilled water system for a gov job. The powers that be at the facility insisted having swing check valves at the pump discharges. In spite of me objecting six times in writing and informing everyone at the 95% review meeting that water hammer was inevitable I was instructed to use the swings. Guess what happened and who they tried to blame.

I've had 2-3 jobs where water hammer broke the baffles in the chiller heads. Gives you funky DP/DT and approach readings.

In past job, I've seen something similar with 20" high pressure steam pipes from a boiler, it was due to flow resonance caused the pipes to shake and bounce about 6". Ended up with hydraulic pipe supports, adding more supports to change stiffness of pipe and changed the amount of steam passing through the pipe to finally stop it. Pretty scary when you are standing next to something like that.

If the steam pipe had been properly stressed Answer-Man that wouldn't have happened.
