    want to autopsy a compressor

    Hi Guys,

Whats the best way to open up a hermetic compressor? Grinder or ?
Real curious as to how or why this scroll compressor took a crap.

    Thanks

Best way it to send it back and let them do it. They’ll have the specs needed!

Copeland will autopsy when requested for a price.

    We usually used angle grinders.

Always educational to cut them open!

Well I’m curious but not that curious. The cost for shipping alone wouldn’t justify it.
    Thanks though.

1st dump the oil and measure. Look for acid and moisture.

2nd Cut it open. Sawzall or grinder and a ton of filings inside.

What kind of crap did it take? ..electrical or mechanical. Assuming you replaced it, find anything wrong with the system operation afterward?

Mechanical crap. Compressor running but with both suction and discharge pressures the same.
Any idea how a scroll can lose its ability to pump?

The scroll popped up during relief and never reset.

That's as good a guess as any...there's also a "floating seal" that might not have been sealing.

I've been studying 'em for years, seen all sorts of mechanical failure modes and still don't fully understand how they work or fail. You can click on the YT video link which will lead you to a bunch of autopsies and save you the trouble...

A portable band saw works well and the gullet of the teeth on the band does a good job of dragging the shavings out. Doesn’t get em all but does better than sawzall.

Have your helper hold the shop vac hose next to the blade as you cut.
