With the crappy treatment he got. I'd be surprised if he came ever back.
You guys seem to like to forget that a lot of companies throw new techs to the wolves. And no, those new techs can't just step out the door and find another company to work for like many of us can.

Well , since its "low voltage" , I guess we can say check from C to Y coming into the board from t-stat to know if its calling
And Larry , Although you "can" check R to Y ..... you are back feeding it that way
That test is usually to see if a switch is open or closed , and since you had 26 volts , this tell you the switch is open ( the t-stat isnt calling ) and if you read 0 volts , the switch would be closed "calling"

Your profile states you are a technician, and a technician should know what the voltage should be between "R" and "Y" when a unit is calling for cooling, and what it should be when it's "NOT" calling for cooling.
Do you work for a HVAC company, or are you a "One Man Show", or are you really a home owner disguised as a technician?

Please explain how asking a "tech" to explain his electrical troubleshooting, and what his background is, is "crappy" treatment?
A simple explanation on his part that he had been "thrown to the wolves", or he is a "student", would yield further assistance.
I would still provide him help if he would at least explain his situation.
Instead of learning the tricks of the trade, learn the trade.

I think you handled him nicely Rundawg, very professional and respectful.

X 2
There's been more then once that a poster came back and admitted being a student or new or thrown to the wolves. They got the respect for being honest.

Wasn't talking about your post.

If he is a Tech then he should come back, simply because he has some "skin in the game" and he realizes he was "un-knowledgeable"as a Tech and he should also realize that "he ain't gonna quit" just cause his feathers got ruffled.
rundawg is ALWAYS nice!!

Not everyone starts out with a thick skin.
The more techs that are scared a way from here. The more that don't learn things the right way.

So how do we weed out the techs from non techs 🤔

With patience.
There will always be a few smart DIYers that post in the tech to tech right a way instead of the AOP. And sometimes they are a little hard to weed out. But be kind either way. A good number of DIYers have been convinced to use a contractor, when treated with kindness.
Tech to tech can get slightly more involved than AOP. Just don't get too deep into diagnostics until its pretty well established that it is a tech.
With this threads OP. It was obvious he wasn't getting a call on the Y terminal. And over the years, I've had more than one new tech measure the same way the OP did. The get confused and make mistakes. Which does make them look like a DIYer on a forum.
This thread was reported as a possible DIY thread, it was decide to see how it goes.
Not all threads are watched, but probably more are than many realize.

What should have voltage when calling for cool?
that is what got this post reported and also garnered the comment.
