Flue piping at its finest!
Friend of mine local here in the industry texted me this picture from a home he just visited. Homeowners brought in someone to finish there basement and apparently he needed to move the main flue stack. My buddy is assuming that 5ft sticks of main vent pipe is all this contractor must have believed existed, so the main stack drops much lower than the equipment, and he made up the rest from there. Classic case of you get what you pay for. Homeowner, was assured that it may look ugly now BUT once enclosed in the finished closet it will all be out of sight and out of mind! Luckily homeowner went with Jiminy Cricket yelling in their ears and called an HVAC tech for a second opinion! And here is that photo:
I edited out the orignal furnace installer pride sticker, they had nothing to do with this.
From the picture, it looks as though the B-vent piping off of the furnace is decreasing in size but it is all the same, just an illusion.

That's not real is it? I looks photo shopped. Please tell us that you were just playing a funny joke and that this isn't real.

I swear that this is real! I may make funny videos for the youtoober, but this is honest to God as real as it gets. Something about panoramic type picture being compressed in a text message seem to do weird things.

That is scary. It could give a person nightmares.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

You don't have to worry about a blocked flue for the furnace. Easiest way out for flue gas is right out the water heater draft hood.

I have seen it happen. I was the one that caused the obstruction when I was still a landscaper. I accidentally hit the top of the cap with a tree branch and completely closed it off but I didn't know it until 2 years later I was doing hvac and I was assigned to replace the pipe because the gas man noticed that the 80% furnace was vented with the water heater.
It turns out the furnace had been venting into the house for at least two years and I believe I was the cause. Thankfully the house was vacant that entire time.

I went to a rental property over the summer that looked like this. Tenant said they were getting headaches and it smelled like refrigerant (maintenance replaced the evaporator coil recently). Open the utility door to find something like that picture. The flue piping was rotted out too, so they tried wrapping it with gray duct tape. Turned the gas off, disabled the furnace and WH.

If the flue is going downhill...makes me wonder which way the condensate is going! Just Saying!

All it needs is a drain tee. You guys are being too harsh.

The foil tape bandit was here.

I am so disappointed that the vent off the furnace is a optical illusion. That reducing double wall elbow is sweet!!!

Well that blows away the one I posted of a HW/htr terminating at the roof into a bathroom exhaust fan roof jack. At least they had the sense to pull the damper out.
-
OMG! there is no way the exhaust is leaving that space..when that AH unit fires up it will push the exhaust through (due to volume) the wh top...you are not allowed to reduce that piping. or even use foil tape...both need to be separate and hopefully that main stack is double walled...i can only imagine the condensate build up ..

Damn that's scary not to mention I'm sure the customer got charged for that shoddy crap...easily fixed by any half decent installer or tech worth a damn....should be locked out and tagged for liability and peace of mind.
