It ain't what you don't know that gets you in trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.

City and county schools sent word out today that they will be closed for at least the next two weeks. I bet this will send folks into a frenzy.

Besides putting more strain on the stores you are gonna have a lot of folks missing work who have younger children who have no where to send them for the day.

I’d say we got 2 or 3 at work who are going to have to stay home with children.

Well, not sure I would have handled it any different. Actually maybe I would have. I do think it’s being over hyped and people are using it to play politics. I’m not overly worried about the whole thing. I’m more worried about all the idiots around me and how they are reacting.

Like someone said earlier, if this thing was so much worse and spread so much faster, shouldn’t ~40% of all people on the cruise ships got infected?

I think the big hysteria is coming from the fact that it is new and somewhat unknown. The flu does not get this coverage because it is our norm, is this virus just a new norm? Next year if it comes around will it get any of this attention? Do we come out with a corona vaccine and the hype goes away? Just wondering, if we didn’t have the flu vaccine how many people would we lose? What would be the death rate? Wonder if the the flu vaccine didn’t exist if the corona would even be on the same scale.

What virus crisis are you talking about?

As of this morning, there were something like 60 who died from the coronavirus.

An average for annual flu deaths is something like 30,000. There's so much daylight between those two numbers, your first question should be, why the hype?

And just to put those two numbers in even more perspective, nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled.

Think about it, where is all this hype coming from?

The hype comes from what is happening in other countries.

And your WAY to early to the party bro!....if you pay attention from the beginning people are infected for 3 to 6 weeks. Long ass time. We have barely had it here for 3 if that. The ones that have already died didnt even make it a couple weeks.

Most people dont want to lose their parents. Most elders and people with underlying diseases dont want to die and sure likely will if thus get this.

I personally dont worry about myself but you know I have A LOT of wonderful senior customers that I dont want to contaminate. I dont want to find out I played a part in them dying.

I already carry masks to doors, try to do everything outside, wipe down surfaces and have hand sanitizer with me. I dont shake hands or stand close and have pulled back on small talk.

But all the hype MOSTLY comes from the infection rate and the concerns of overwhelmed hospitals. As I said earlier, the quarantine will be dependant on hospital beds.

Italy is now reported an influx of younger patients so that isn't gonna help anything.

    Iran is digging mass graves.

We havent made it to where these other countries are so we dont really have any idea if this will get really bad or not.

And we dont know if this might mutate to something much worse. Or better. Theres just not that much data available

    Spot on!!!

My take on all this, it is the concern of an overloaded healthcare system driving government response.

And, yeah, people my age are more than likely fine. But I do worry about older customers and the elders who post here (seriously). I've got a large job starting at a retirement home that I hope to delay a month. Don't need the stress of what could happen or the guilt if something did.

I think it's Jmacs sig, "Panic rarely works". Very true. But being prepared and cautious always helps.

yeah we are shut down....Except my Sons school. They where actually planning to leave on a mission trip to Peru tomorrow and finally canceled it today. I was going back and forth with the school and my exwife over him going. I have for some time felt like this school is a little cult like....Im just glad they canceled the trip to be honest. I suspect they will close the school from pressure in the next couple days....

The death rate is low with proper care... High with proper care.. the world can only take care of so many people... Some of these nations have close to a ten percent death rate from the virus.
Once we overwhelm health care services rates will go up on deaths.
It's the real deal.. .going on a cruise and several people dieing tells us it's real... Not an ordinary flu.
