    Just Wondering

Can't help but wonder why the guests visiting this site usually outnumber the members 100 to 1. Does anyone know the reason?

If I did the math right I came up with 48 to 1.

Do you have any idea why? At one point earlier it was close to 100 to 1. Either way it seems to me a lot of these folks would join us.

    My guesses;
    1. "Guests" are looking for assistance or help.
    2. Members typically have daytime jobs and "visit" (logon) after hours.
    3. Many regular "Guests" may have been members that got Banned and can't become members again.

I know that I don't login about 80% of the time unless I have a decent answer to a question or need to ask "The Brain Trust (H-Talk has some of the best minds in the industry)" for help.

This is a great site and you would think anyone remotely involved with HVAC would want to join after looking at it. I looked at other sites before I found this one and none of them hold a candle.

A lot of it is people getting search engine hits and leading them here.
They can still see whatever hit on the search without joining.

Welcome CoolGuy4987. A lot of threads here are not only fun to be part of but we share our knowledge. My input is a lot less than a lot of the others because I was never an installer and didn't work directly on the equipment.

Thanks VTP99 but I have learned more here than any place since I got out of school. That was 1969 and this thread would have been great had it existed back then.

For every 100 posts I read, I post to one. I usually don’t post unless I have something new or constructive to say. Usually, someone else has posted the advice I would have given. Every time I’ve posted a question or problem, you guys are so quick and willing to help out!

    Same!

I read (and learn) more than I write. So many smart people here, there is rarely a time that I have anything to add.

Lahrs we all feel the way you do. Many times if I were to add to a post it would just be a repeat of a comment already made. I like to ask technical questions because every time there are responses that amaze (not surprise) me.

Seems a lot of tradesmen lurk here. And just do searches here until they find a thread or two that leads them in the right direction.

That way, they don't get the belittling replies that imply they shouldn't be in the trade.

Lots of home owners also lurk to find the answers to their questions.

Why join if your going to be belittled.

And of course, who doesn't like checking out the Wall of Shame forum from time to time.

I got a hard knock coming up. Old Carrier heat pump. Forty years old. Two circuits, and each circuit has 4-6 check valves. No numbers on the wires. Bunch o' relays. Won't defrost. Mid level tech turned it over to me. Printed out the schematic last night, then taped the three pages together. Including the legend page and the component layout page (five pages total), that thing is four feet long. Didn't actually measure it, but it sure looks that long.

You ever work on any of the old Carriers? They're famous for making you follow the circuits back and forth from high volts to the low volts. You get relays with two or three sets of contacts, and you start going off in all sorts of directions . . .
