    Infra Red Heating for High Bay Buildings

    Hello,

    We have a high Bay Building with a ceiling height of 24'. At this time, the Building is un-occupied and utilizing salamander heaters for heating in winter ( two salamander heaters with a capacity of 2250 KBTU/ Hours).

    The Building is located in the Toronto.

    We have estimated the following gas consumption with infra red heating.

    Heating Load = 2942915 BTU/Hour
    Toronto Heating Degree Days = 3600 Hours (from Toronto Weather Data)
    Toronto Outside Design Temperature = -20 C ( -1 deg F)
    Heating Hours = (2942915 *24) / (65-(-1)) (Heating Hours = Degree Days *24 / (65- Outside DesignTemp) ) = 1309 Hours /Year
    Total BTUs / Year = 1309*2942915 = 3852543273 BTUs
    Conversion Factor = 0.000001055 GJ/ BTU
    GJs = 4045.170 GJ
    1GJ = 9.48043 Therms
    Total Therms = 4045.170*9.48043 = 38349.9552 Therms
    Cost of Gas = 1.77 $/ Therms
    Total Gas = 1.7*38349.9552 = 67879.42 Therms

    Can you please comment if this calculation is correct and make sense?
    or Suggest corrections?

    Also how to calculate the cost of salamander heaters gas ?

    Thank you

    First, Salamander heaters are non-vented so they are extremely dangerous because they can produce large amounts of Carbon Monoxide. I know you said the buildings are unoccupied but nonetheless, people do enter them from time to time. Radiant heaters defy typical logic because they heat mainly objects not air. Thus they will heat the floor or any objects in the building below them. Thus, the remainder of the air in the building does not have to be heated nearly as warm, saving fuel.

    They will pay for them selves very rapidly vs salamander heaters and they won't kill or injure anyone (if installed propeller)

    Best source of sizing and fuel usage would be one of the IR heating mfgs. Sizing is not like heated air systems.

    They make a closed combustion tube style and an open radiant burner style. Open radiant is fine in a well ventilated space and tubes for tighter buildings with occupants.
