    would you service this furnace?

With proper access blocked by the water softener, and the excessive rust and corrosion clearly visible, I declined to repair this unit. What would you have done?

The inside looks fine in your pictures I think that's just corrosion from the salt. I would have serviced it but then again in my market most everything looks worse than that.

I would have had the furnace serviced and repaired, (to get operational), and billed and collected. If softener needed shut down and moved immediately for that to happen, that would be included. Otherwise, I would schedule a follow up visit preferably when it gets slower to come back again and permanently relocate softener and clean and follow up with any other maintenance. A good way to build repeat customer for yearly service (which is why this unit is in this condition) and when this needs replaced.

If it were me I would have unscrewed the tubing from that salt tank and moved it out of my way. I'll bet that would have taken all of about 1 minute.

Lots of people work on furnaces in worse spots than that one. You can't just run away from every job that you don't like.

I might tell them to have the equipment removed from in front of the furnace then call me back when access is feasable.
If the argue, tell them to call someone else.
Otherwise, disconnect the softener equipment, service the furnace, then tell them you are not a plumber and they will have to call someone to reconnect it.

If you can't pull the blower out in my opinion not serviceable. Why do we break our backs for other idiots mistakes? I guess to make $$ but where is the line? Had a horizontal attic furnace with 3 inch clearance on the front. Said when anything breaks = new furnace. There should be a misc idiot charge in the flat rate book.
