    PTCR is a positive coefficient thermistor.... Works by allowing current to flow to the start windings when cold and as current flows through the thermistor, it heats up and "chokes off" the current flow much like a current relay would. And they do get hot as a part of the design. One of the manufacturers of these devices are in my city.

    PTCR can be used on ice machines (MOSTLY) because most ice machines start in the "equalized(Hi/LO)pressure" mode. So there is no compressor differential pressure to overcome. If there is a press differential then a "hard start kit" would be required.

    and they’ll run a full cycle 15 min min before shutting off!

    I guess I'm thinking of icer's where the comp does not shut off between harvest and (re) freeze. Mani's are that way,I think.

    They never shut off until the bin switch opens

    The PTCR in modern ice machines is the most reliable part! I don't even remember the last time I replaced one.
