I be its the panel carrier uses to cover the blower. The one with the control board mounted on it that must be removed to access the blower.

He said the inside unit was a TWH. That is a horizontal unit, coil on one end, blower in the middle, with a place for elements on the outlet end, the blower attached to this box for the elements. It seems like those came with an opening for the elements and if no elements were used you had to put a plate over the opening otherwise the outlet air off the blower would blow back to the inlet side of the blower. That hole was about 5x12 so you could get a fair amount of air through it.

That's called the blower cut-off plate.

It can vary dramatically depending on the use of the blower. Meaning, low pressure high volume Vs high pressure low volume.

The only metal panel I can think of is the plate that forces the air out. We remove it to change the blower wheel, maybe some fool forgot to put it back!

First post on here. I'm a maintenance technician in florida and have been doing it for about a year.

I had a similar issue on a carrier unit where the heat strips/kit had been removed or never installed. There was no plate or anything like that, just a gaping hole above the blower. i thought that was pretty wierd.
I dont remember the pressures or anything like that.

I called my field supervisor and asked him if that was ok to be like that and he told me it was fine. Is it okay to leave it like that?

On some units, the exterior panel would probably make the 'seal'. Doubt I would leave it that way though.

Yeah I felt the same way. I hate to leave things halfway like that but I gotta do what my supe says and there was no way I could have done anything about it. We didnt install it at least.

Still bugs me though

Welcome to the forum.

I have seen quite a few like that. There was a time that Carrier/Bryant/Payne was shipping the air handlers out without that plate assuming that you would be putting in heat stips, even on straight a/c. I think that has changed now.

I try to always keep some scraps of sheet metal in my truck. Probably would be faster to just screw in a piece of metal there than to make a call.
