I work for a wholesaler. There are items I cannot buy from the manufacturer due to their contractual obligations. I can however buy from an exclusive distributor and resell to my customer. What you should be asking is why your parts house doesn't want to go the extra mile for you. Honeywell is a perfect example. I sell a ton of Honeywell products but cannot buy direct from all of their divisions. I have the resources to circumvent the issue and provide my customer with the parts they need. In many cases my cost will be the same as the end user, were they to do the footwork on their own. Fortunately for me, not all of them have the time or the resources to find things on their own.

Tier 1 manufacturers like Siemens, Honeywell and JCI have two tiers of products. They do this because they are bringing in more than HVAC. It's a different business. I really don't know how Schneider is playing it with Andover and Struxureware at the moment. Generally, branches use that one thing and they pass a different line through Tier 2 Distribution to contractors. Lot's of contractors can bid jobs with the same stuff. Easy to specify small stuff.

Then you get these Tier 2 companies such as Delta, Reliable, ALC, Siemens(Talon), Andover, Alerton. They go off exclusive territories and usually have some sort of agreement no secondary lines by the contractor getting the deal. You need to be high volume to work around that.

Other tier 2 like KMC and Distech are mixed. Distech is a little transitional as they are also moving back into distribution based on volume. If you are exclusive, you are bringing in the dollars. If not, you are pushed to distribution. Heavily into getting specified.
