Is there such thing as a pipe tracer???

Was wondering if anyone knows of a pipe tracing system besides 2 guys and a hammer (one on each end) Something similar to what is used for underground with the wire? The only thing I could think of that would cause a potential problem is if that pipe was up against something else metallic or another pipe that would give you false readings.

We’re in an apartment building and a few units are being remodeled. Everything is hydronic and all the piping is covered. Even after walls are open it’s difficult to tell at times.

So you're looking to turn those units systems off for the renovations ?

Yes. Everything in each unit is off. I have 6 circuits per unit. Supply’s all have valves, and I have 1 main return at the pump iso flange. I know I could disconnect the supplies and blow nitro through them. Problem is the heaters for each unit are 2” below a fire rated ceiling, so I don’t have any room for that.

We’re just re routing some lines in the unit so they can take walls down.

So there's a common return manifold ?

Correct. I can isolate every supply circuit in every unit. But the return circuits just tie into 1 manifold per unit and go back to that particular units pump. Each unit has its own supply and return header. Supply headers only have valves on them per each circuit.

Is the manifold accessible ? Would they be up for isolation valves at the manifold ?

Yes. But the way everything is out together I don’t have any room to add valves on the return unless I take that entire manifold down. I have to go back there today. I’ll take a couple pictures.
