Ductless split condenser in above ceiling
You read the title correctly. I found a ductless split condenser in the ceiling on a maintenance for some heat pumps. I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry but I am hoping I never have to work on it.

I see 'Peligro' on the sticker. Should be covering the entire unit with that warning, in all languages.

LG large goof up.

I'm tired of these mediocre "semi flammable" refrigerants. If we're going to do it let's do it right.
Unless we change direction we are likely to end up where we are going.

DIY’s pats themselves on their backs and say “look at that, we installed it and it works! Not so hard after all!”
... good job crew, good job.

I did that once on the middle floor, in the middle of a court house. The condenser was put in the suspended ceiling which was the main air return for the entire floor. The building supervisor told me to do it and after he signed the order saying so and taking full responsibility for it we installed it.
Guess the person's office we were air conditioning had a lot more pull than the code people.
Use the biggest hammer you like, pounding a square peg into a round hole does not equal a proper fit.

We have a few hospitals around here that could accommodate something like this, but there is a constant change over of air through the space and its kind of like a mechanical access area and looks similar to this.

It’s actually done somewhat frequently in my area. People use them to replace once-through WSHP units that are now banned (city water through condenser then to drain) when they can’t connect to a building loop. Since the building return air is pulled through the ceiling it removes the heat....
It’s not a great setup for server rooms that run all day and all night considering the building system shuts down after hours and enters setback.
Access is always terrible. We all hope they never fail, but like everything mechanical or electrical you know it always will.
Since they have little other option in a tall tower I can only imagine they do it out of necessity.
With that said, they usually keep them as low to the ceiling as possible so the top can be removed for access (ish). It looks like that one is slammed up right tight. Probably so they didn’t have to seismically restrain it.
There are better ways to install it than having it stuck in a ceiling but that would cost money, and we all know how that ends... they end up paying for it in the end, it just sucks for us with how they choose to pay for it.
The problem is someone always comes in with this great idea to stick it in the ceiling and swears up and down that it will work, so the customer chooses to go with their quote because it’s cheeper and they say it will work.... I’m preaching to the choir here, nobody wins but the installer so what motivation do they have to stop?
You just keep putting those stickers on those units guys, we’ll find a way to put an end to it, and we’ll make it look like an accident too...
