    is there a D in fridge but not in refrigerator ....

    Because without the "d," the "i" would be long, like the "i" in "bite."

    And if you dropped the "e" from the end of "frige" to make the "i" short, the "g" would become hard, as in "fig."

    You can spell it "frij," but this isn't proper English.

    Ya gotta spell it like "bridge."
