    AM I being overcharged?

I have a 4-ton Rheem split system, 6 years old, and still under parts warranty.

It has been diagnosed as having a leaking evap coil and I am quoted $ for the labor and refrigerant. They describe the job as taking 2-3 hours. The equipment in located in an equipment closet accessible from the outside. Very easy access.

    Is this excessive?

Price is regional, labor and refrigerant tax included? If someone came out and looked it over that persons time is added in also. Register the coil, you may get upwards of 10 years, unless that coil follows the original 10 year warranty meaning you have 4 years left.

Prices aren’t allowed but I would strongly advice getting another quote.

My guess is that a good chunk of that is new refrigerant, which is NOT covered by any manufacturer as far as I know. They may also be charged any amount deemed reasonable by the distributor to process said warranty as well as freight for the old part if the factory requests it back. Any time you have to open up the refrigeration system is going to be expensive, no getting around that but definetly get more qoutes

You have 60 days after the install to Register, I think it’s a bit to late. :-) But it probably was registered because they’re quoting him a labor price.

Yes! That’s probably it, that 410A is just off the scale in price. :-)

I guess I am living in the wrong area, I would not have any work here at those prices.

I was referring to once whomever installs the new coil to register it or homeowner try to register it. Unless after the paperwork is filed at the distributor and up channeled that coil may follow the original manufacturers warranty from 6 years ago and that new coil may only have 4 years left instead of possibly 10 years???

Yeah, it's been a long day, this 110° weather and 90% humidity is killing my brain cells, what little I have left.

Well home warranty companies pay $10 per pound, so go from there. We cannot buy R-22 that cheap though just saying.

Thank you all for your timely and insightful responses. To clarify, the quote was only for the actual labor to install the new coil and for the refrigerant. I was charged a diagnostic fee for the visit to determine the problem.

I will be soliciting additional quotes this morning.
