I've seen a couple of OEM units like that. But they were heat pumps. They can still trap some moisture, but not very much due to the heat. Oh, and the brazing was a lot cleaner, LOL.
I do a triple evac with nitro to remove non condensables.
Doood....could there have been a muffler there prior to the swap ?
Rheem only used mufflers on heat pumps of this era. Looks to me the compressor has been sweatin a long time with those water stains. Got more issues than just a bad drier/compressor install.
We had a tech cut out the muffler on a system and pipe it in then install a ll filter on the l line as you might do with a goodman. It made an awful vibration sound in heat mode, was quite as it should be in cooling mode.
I was in site about the issue as well as other techs. We couldn’t figure it out. Even had the factory tech out and he couldn’t figure it out. He decided just replace everything and we did.
The old CU was sitting in our shop and i was leaned up against it talking to another tech that just went to a heatpump class. He mentioned something about a muffler and it hit me like a ton of bricks. We pulled the the top off and sure enough no muffler on the discharge line...mystery solved lol.
removed the muffler/gas/liquid line filter drier and what do ya know, finally got superheat and subcool came down. initially i had 0 superheat and 21 subcool, now i have a steady 12 superheat and 9ish subcool....thanks to the hack job i make some good dollars...
