Question TRANE RTHD - Leak on screw below compressor

    Hello from France :-)

I found a leak on a screw located below the compressor (a Trane CHHC)

I didn't find any exploded view for this compressor, and the IOM doesn't mention what it cover.

I guess i'll find oil when removing it, but no idea in wich quanity.

My first question is : Have you any idea how many oil can flow from this point ?

Second question : Is there any gasket under the screawhead ? or is it an NPT Thread ?

Thank you for helping, and Merry Christmas to all of you !

Shouldn't get much oil from there at all. No gasket, it is NPT thread. That'll be an easy one. 👍

I would strongly suggest you check with Trane parts before you go by this answer .
Ask yourself this ...if its NPT why is the hex head bigger than the hole its in and why cant you see a portion of the thread with some sort of sealant on it ??

I will ask Trane Parts Service but they don’t give a lot of technical info... Anyway, there is always a first time, it’s the path of learning (but it will be better without to much oil on my hands :-)

I'm a Trane technician and have taken apart these compressors many times. That plug is just beneath the rotors and after isolating the compressor and transferring refrigerant, there will be very little to no oil there. It is NPT and there is likely only loctite on the threads. Contacting Trane parts will do no good, they offer no technical information.

I'll bite, because I was on-call last night and got zero sleep, plus I'm old and angry.

It ain't NPT dude. That compressor can hold about a gallon of oil, depending on conditions. Ask me how I know this..............
