To be fair, this was outdoors so there are reasons behind it. None the less, it sure looks like an abortion in the middle of an enclosed mech room now. The initial outdoor install, conditions and time constraints made it WOP worthy.

looks like exhaust duct....maybe for chemical hoods, or lab hoods?

if it is exhaust, I don't see a problem with it.

I think that is a BL2 exhaust system. After working on it, you may have contracted super herpes.
Orrrr....... maybe my sleeping pills are.kicking in.

Its lab exhaust. There was a farm of little baby fans covering the roof. Now its a central system with adult size fans.

The mech rooms are 5# sacks with 10# in them. Walking in this one without the back story, you wonder why space was given to display artwork. "Caterpillar in ductwork". The ME knew this addition was coming. Somehow running a 24"+ branch down in the space and back out, both at odd angels sounded like a good idea. Sure there's a good seal in the roof & exterior wall... That black line along the branch is refer and there are 3-4 more that are behind the branch you don't see. Is there a standard witches hat for 24"+ duct with 4 insulated refer lines 4" away?

Had they ran the branch above the roof, and ran those takeoffs straight up above the roof line...

1. 3-5 elbows could have been eliminated. This would have reduced the systems static setpoint guessing by 1" give or take.

2. Look at it wrong, something fails in epic fashion (the weakest ductwork) and associated downtime/safety to go with it. System is running right at the pressure limit of the weakest link because of crap like #1.

3. A 500+ ton chiller could occupy the space saved and there always additional big objects looking for homes.

4. Operating costs of having higher static.

Again, I tossed the coin on WOP or WOS. Its piss poor design. I respect the tinknocker that put it in, poor bastard. It is a good install preformed under $hit conditions. Design on the other hand, FAIL!
